I recently read a little about the plans to build an
"elevator" which will reach into space.
What does everyone else think / know about this.
Do you like the idea, do you think it will work.
I work in the "current" elevator industry and am interested in the publics thoughts..

I read an article about it on CNN.com. It was very interesting.
I agree it does sound very "out there" .. Literally..
but it just might work. I'll try to find that article and post a link to it... stand by

found this at Space.com - searched for space elevator.
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- Make way for the ultimate high-rise project: the space elevator. Long viewed as science fiction "imagineering",
researchers are gathering momentum in their pursuit to propel this uplifting concept into actuality.

YOu cannot beat >> this link << for info on the elevator. This is the "home" of the research team working on
the project to make it a reality.
Seems a little scifi to me, but, more power to them. I just hope my tax dollars are not paying for this.

There was something about this on PM magazine. To do this, we would have to make a new metal that could take that kind of weight. Second of all, it
would help if we caught an astroid in close orbit. All of this is quite out of reach for us now.
The elevator would be magnetically powered. With 2 to 4 shuttles.

Yes it is to use nano-fibres. What is interesting is it appears to advanced from a fundamental ideal developed by Tesla.
Once again he proves himself a visionary!
This is a very interesting concept.

I don't believe it would be possible, but would it serve a purpose? If it worked, yes. If you could build an elevator which extended out of the
atmosphere and was big enough to carry a space vehicle, life would be a hell of a lot easier for Space industry, and as a result we may see a few more
giant leaps for mankind in a rather short window of time. But, as they won't EVER be capable of building such an elevator, that's all nonsense!

I didn't read that, but i'll tell you one thing, that's one way I would NOT wanna get sent up to space! Tooooo risky! If they didn't figure out
the momentum exactly you could end up landing headfirst in the Martian desert!
Ain't no brakes on a slingshot!
