! ! Steps on How To Stop POP UPS ! !

Topic started on 24-10-2003 @ 12:58 PM by TejanoRey

Here is a thread that I have copied from www.tek-tips.com ( they are the "all knowing" of computer questions )

PS: You will see SpyBot but, you will also notice that there are MANY other things you can safely do to fix your issue.

How to beat your advertising popups & other browser nasties
FAQ608-3482

If you have popups appearing overly frequently, you may have some "adware" on your PC.

Adware, spyware, and browser hijackers are nasty beings, full of fang and poison to irritate, lurking in the dark damp corners of your PC.
You must go into battle suitably armed.

Your first steps in the assault should be to delete your internet browser's cache ("Temporary Internet Files" in IE) and to delete your cookies.

Failing that, the next step is to download an adware removal program. The following are all recommended.

Spybot Search & Destroy
security.kolla.de...
downloads-zdnet.com.com...

Adaware:
www.lavasoftusa.com...
downloads-zdnet.com.com...

BHO demon - goes for the "Browser Helper Objects"
www.definitivesolutions.com...

Hijack This (counters homepage hijacking)
www.lurkhere.com...

A second cause of popups is ads that target the Windows Messenger Service. These ads are not hosted on your PC, so there's nothing to clean off. You can either setup a firewall (and block the originating IPs or ports 131 and 139), or disable the messenger service completely.

Free personal firewall
www.free-firewall.org...
www.zonelabs.com... (apologies - it is a bit "salesy" - look for the free zonealarm download)

Disabling Windows messenger service

www.theeldergeek.com...
www.whitehat-security.com...

Another way to block banners and popups is to prevent them from accessing their own site...you do this by editing your "hosts." file (normally found in the windows directory).

Hosts file editing (banner blocking)
www.ssw.com.au...

EMS free surfer MK II (popup stopper)
www.kolumbus.fi...

Spyware Blaster (for intercepting spyware BEFORE it installs)

Proximitron is another good way to stop popups, hostile scripts, and other nasties. Mozilla, Firebird and Opera all have popup blockers I believe, and also having an application to sift through cookies helps to keep your system healthy

Get opera, it has a better (integrated) email program, SO NO MORE M$ OUTLOOK!, and looks a lot better than IE.
You can choose to either block all pop-ups or just unrequested pop ups.

I believe that new Google toolbar blocks pop ups also.

Get Adaware to get rid of your spywear.
Replace Ie with Opera, it has options for enabling or disabling all popups.

google toolbar has an excellent built-in pop-up stopper.

By excellent, I mean it work better than most pop-up stopper I've tried. Plus it can remember website that you want to allow pop-up.

Give it a try, but first run both Ad-aware and Spybot to remove the malicious software that might be in your computer.

A few good ways to stop pop-ups.
1. Use something like Google Tool-Bar on IE
2. Use Mozilla, Firebird or Slmbrowser. Fast and GREAT built in Popup blockers.
3. The Windows Messenger service causes alot of popups even if IE isnt open. You can disable it with this. You dont need this messenger, its just a #ty mistake by M$.
4. Always run Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware like once a week.

My Norton Personal Firewall blocks pretty much all the ads and popups, and the firewall itself is handy.
