Now every 6 year old knows how to start up a cessna. But where is The Switch in most helicopters? What is the procedure?

Are you planning on leaving in a helecopter any time soon?

Start the engine, "engage" rotor and use throttle.. and then in flight there is this risky bussiness to control engine power and rotor angle.. so..

flying a helicopter really is much harder and more dangerous than flying a plane..

Then you have to master fun things like counter rotation and making sure you dont bounce off down the field! Sorting out the collective pitch, throttle and direction of travel should keep you busy for a few minutes

There used to be a book in the mother earth news book club called "How to fly a helicopter?" Maybe you could find it in the library.

I think that one must have more experience than reading one god damn book.

Would be to get a helicopter flight trainer cd,they are a real bitch to fly,you can figure out a lot of it on your own,but dont bother trying to land or hover, just jump out over water from at least 50'.
Tailstrike is an issue for beginners, try one with a shrouded rear rotor.
Isn't there a chopper out now where the exhaust is ducted out the tail to counter rotational torque?.

yep there is a system out like that, its called NOTAR (no tail rotar)

How do you mean not very practicle? The whole Idea for it is to be practicle, so that it could get low into trees without the rear rotar putting you nose down on the floor. And as for Mil, wat for the americans/brits to invent it wait a few years change the name and the colour and call it there own......

AKA Tupolev Concordski ....

Did you know that sikorsky (most us helicopters..) H-19, H-34, SH-3, HH-3, CH-53, HH-53, MH-52, RH-53, UH-60, EH-60, HH-60, MH-60, SH-60, H-76, MH-53, S-92 and so on.. are Russian!!!

And the tail rotor is not a "obsticle".. when talking about low-flying..
Hell, helicopter with tail rotor can land..

Tail strike is a big prob with inexperienced pilots,I recommended to freeman that he would be better off jumping out over water than trying to land it.
You ever watched a nasty tail strike accident?,it ain't pretty, look it up on the web.

This sounds peculiar,he want's to start it and fly it and not be concerned about landing it!,Oh my god!!
freeman,is this chopper in your back yard?,if not,you may not want to mess with it,somebody might get annoyed.
Pardon me,just being a smart azz.

Don't you guy's watch discovery channel?
There is this very cool program called a chopper is born. They basically build a chopper from lose parts (one of those DIY kits). He also takes flying lessons and explains how a helicopter actually works.

And with a bit of googling you should be able to find out where the start button is...
