I have to say SAS not only because they're British but because their standard of training and expertise is higher

How can you compare a local area SWAT unit to the SAS? There is no comparison. Both have different mission's- though some are similiar, hostage rescue being a main. The SAS are trained for war, SWAT on the other hand are not. Though they may have some type of internal crisis contingency (counter-insurrection) plan. You could go on and on about differences. No unit is better than the other; they both have their strengths and weaknesses, if not there would be no need to have various SpecOps forces.
BTW, the british are not the only one's with the SAS: Aussies, NZ and Rhodesia (?) I think...
Just my 2 cents.

SAS by miles.....

The SAS are THE BEST in the world and have proven it time and time again with missions like the Falklands and the Iranian Embassy.

Dont forget also that Delta Force often seconds men to the SAS to make sure that the US is keeping up with the Brits.

So the SAS is sort of like the U.S.' Navy SEALs? Thats what it looks like from reading that website.

SWAT teams are just local police with special training and weapons. Most big cities have SWAT teams. They are not military. SAS is a british military organization, special forces, much like the US SEALs or Delta.

SAS are similiar (If not better... biased!) To the American Delta Force

Col. Charlie Beckwith (Hardchargin' special forces soldier and CT specialist, godfather of Delta), RIP, spent time with the SAS I believe in the 60's (?) Upon arrival back in the states, he demanded the creation of a similar specops capability for the US military- the creation of Delta Force. So basically the SAS and Delta are near duplicates. Want to know more, check out a book called, Delta Force- by Charles Beckwith. Or do further search on www.specialoperations.com...
SEALs are a more maritime strike force; fully capable of performing limited land ops.

I think I heard about that one day while reading a book at my library when I was bored. I wonder what would happen if both UK and US had replenished supplies and they went to war together. And neither was in a war currently.

I've never had SAS training so I wouldn't know about them. I find that SWAT training isn't that bad!

I was feeling a little bored today so I used search to look for threads with "SAS" in the title.

found this.

you know sometimes we all wine and moan about how bad threads have got (I am very guilty of this), this thread reminds me that its always been this way and probably always will be.

Really this thread made me laugh out loud with some of the comments.
