I just heard them saying the comet was 83 million miles away at the time of impact. The time between launch and impact was 6 months, so the distance makes sense.

What is shield mode?

It's too stop pieces of comet hitting the flyby craft and damaging it basically.

They said around 12 to 20 hours for the other images to come.
