AstroCreep, Good post.
As I stated before, there needs to a definitive definition of what is sexually sugestive. By what standards are we going to set?

Many, many of the things that we see, hear on a daily basis on TV, Radio, general day to day activities, would have shocked people 20 years ago.

If there is to be a law created, then there needs to be a standard and not just an arbitrary statement.

Then, shouldn't there be some kind of guideline as to just what isn't acceptable? I mean, every parent knows that when you make rules, you can't be that vague without problems.

This is like congress passing the patriot with ever reading it....we don't know just what it all means, buy, hey, we'll go for it.

That's already illegal AC.

This is about trying to make "gyrating" illegal (or no school funding for you).

It's not like any community out there can't just say no to gyrating. These gray areas are decided by communities, PTA's, parents, coaches and the participants.

They shouldn't be decided by government IMO.

If polls indicate Texans are thrilled with this, fine.
Not my state though and not at the federal level. I'm all for state's rights almost as much as I am individual rights. But if this comes near a national proposal, I'll send money, march, shake my own booty and raise hell anyway I can to stop it.

I'll start going to games again if that happens......"go deep" will take on a new meaning!

The absurdity is to be expected: politicians are weather vanes, swinging in the wind of perceived public opinion. This fool is catering to the perceived "majority" opinion of the Jaaayzus is my co-pilot mindset.
Once you move away from the Waltz, all dancing is gyrating....so what are we to do?

Side note: I played Christian Youth Organization (CYO) ball from age 9 through HS. I was completely mesmerized when the cheerleaders did the thing with a letter on the panties & all bent over & spelled out something...wasn't too sure what the thoughts were at the time.....but I was having 'em!!

I think this one was born (again) that way. He's hated. A letter to the editor from Texas Rep Garnet Coleman about Edward's problem with bigotry, namely being one.

Letters to the editor
Rep. Al Edwards should know bigotry is wrong
Friday, April 29, 2005

To the Editor:
As reported in Tuesday’s Fort Worth Star Telegram, Rep. Al Edwards called homosexuality a “social ill” on the floor of the House. He stated, “I take offense when people associate me and my race and my culture with a social ill. I don’t see how the two relate.”

Representative Edwards ought to be ashamed of himself. His comments are bigoted, hateful and just plain wrong. No one is comparing race with sexual orientation — they are not the same thing, but discrimination is discrimination. As an African American, Edwards should know what it feels like to hear such hurtful words. The only way to stop prejudice is to practice what you preach. Bigotry says a lot more about a bigot’s own insecurities than it says about those they target.

TEXAS REP. GARNET COLEMAN
Houston

He's probably just got a problem with sexuality period. Sees it everywhere, and hates it. Wants to stamp it out.

Edwards needs to go.

Has anyone noticed the growing trend of "amibiguous" laws and what-not that have been discreetly (sp?) passed. It's not enough that they "interpret" our Constitution to fit their totalitarian goals...now they need these travesties on the state level.

I find nothing wrong with toning down cheerleading routines, but this behavior by our children hasn't been acquired "honestly". This is a side-effect of the media! I liken it to drug ads...you hear all the good that it does, and at the end you hear about the possible headaches, fatigue, liver damage, elevated blood pressure,...you get the picture.

The next question is...what happens to a cheerleader the gets caught "gyrating" or "booty shaking"? Is it a misdemeanor...felony? Will the school, coach, or parents be prosecuted? oy!

By the way, I believe someone mentioned earlier that these are ELECTIVES. I haven't heard parents screaming about how their daughters are seducing everyone with their dances.

As far as the AIDS and pregnancy correllation, PARENTS RAISE YOUR CHILDREN! Dont' sit them in front of the TV. Don't rely on daycare. Discipline is a MUST...consistant discipline at that.

i wonder if this 'suggestive dancing' just became a 'problem' now....or more likely the male adult that introduced this bill realized that he probably wouldn't be able to control himself if he saw another 'hip sway' or 'high kick' ( you know, with those short skirts) ect. gosh, i remeber when i was in high school (many many moons ago) it was never an issue..even with the parents there.
so why now??? is it that the climate iin AMERIKA is a climate where the individual has sway over the masses?? a climate in which the govt is now the moral high point that we all should look up too??? if that is what TX thinks....Mexico can have it back..................................................

Maybe this is not such a bad idea after all.

Whats wrong with a little restraint? Our society is awash in sex...its all over the TV's, magazines, computers and billboards. Im ok with Sex, but its the children who need to be protected for as long as possible.

Slowly, but surely the degenerates in the TV and Music industry have led our society down a sick path where kids are being sexualized younger and younger....and where does it stop? My best friends 10 year old daughter was raised on MTV and she acts and dresses like a tramp.....Monkey see, monkey do.

If you leave it up to the Viacom crowd....every American girl would be a slut by the time she's 11. This is a slow-moving Take-down of Christian values in America society.

Its about time a good family man stood up and said ENOUGH!!!!
We're here to watch a football game, not to see underage girls give panty-shots to the crowd. Im sure they can cheer their team without all the gyrating.

wheew, ok rant over.

Kind of interesting here ... Seems like y'all want it "both" ways. It is, generally, ok for young ladies to become clad in suggestive fashion (whether you think it is or not ... Someone will)... Let them get out and gyrate and prance about giving people limited views of scantily covered nether regions, and that's all ok.

There was a fellow who, a few months ago here in Missouri, was busted for pornography. His crime? Posting pics of cheerleaders in their various poses and gyrations on a website. Interestingly, television interviews with some of the girls who had been photographed were outraged and shocked.

So... Let's see here... It is ok for these young ladies to boogie and shake their collective booties and such and show scantily clad parts of their bodies, for any and all to see. However, it's pornographic and outrageous to take pics and post them for the same public to see?

The outcry was a major thing here, and I think it kind of alludes to the, minimally, double standards and freakishness in our takes on ethics, morality and civil liberties.

I sometimes wonder how we got this far since 1776.

Uh, okay then. I was really kidding but remind me never to elect you for schoolboard, whoever you are.

Now, all kidding aside. I hate new laws. I think that everytime one is made, we lose some freedom. This case is no exception.

The community guides this sort of thing already by election board members who hire coaches that either do or do not promote this sort of thing depending on the demographic. No law is needed and if it were, it would have to spell it out and give specific boundaries. This is a call for attention and nothing more.

Secondly, 40 years ago we never thought explicit sexual acts would be deemed primetime entertainment and would be resigned to stag films for the perverted. Now, by 8pm on most any evening, one can tune into a channel promoting movies containing or mocking sexual intercourse, oral and anal sex. To say "it will never happen" is to put confidence in a moral society we have yet to see.

In the days of Elvis, it was also thought these were just actions of adult performer and it would never trickle down to having 12 and 13 year old girls imitating a pelvic thrust..but we have..and younger. And its accepted by most of today's society. So, before you begin foretelling what will and will not happen in the future, realize there were those like you in the days of the Elvis saying the same damn thing.

I personally see nothing wrong with women who are college and pro sports cheerleaders or exotic dancers doing these movements, however I do see a huge problem with junior highschool and to a degree even highschool girls being directed by adults to imitate it. Not every pre-teen girl out there wants to be sexually explicit and thrust her pelvis in front of her friends and family at the Friday night ballgame. Should they be forced to as part of an acedemic-based program in order to participate? I thought a woman's body was her body...or in this case a youg girl's body.

Is it really that freaking important that we force children into sexual activity so quickly? Can we not merely allow them to mature normally? Would it not be better to have 12 to 16 year old young women performing a routine they would be proud for their family to attend?

No, we don't need a law. As I have always said, we need parents. regardless of what the "state" may hand down, your kids are still your kids and you have a voice and when your daughter turns up missing, raped or dead, no one else is going to feel the pain you will bare.

hmm the edit wasn't working right, i added this article and lost the whole original post when I went to add a link

Anyways Public Intoxication has been fought and and the lawsuit won in the Michigan Supreme Courts. It was ruled to be against the admendment for cops to force a pedestrian to take a breathalizer without a search warrant.

But there is a thing called a dress code in schools. The school should decide, not the government. Then if the students don't like it, they can have a sit in. When mom mother was in high school, it was mandatory for girls to wear skirts. They couldn't wear jeans. (Now people are talking about banning skirts and only wearing jeans). They had a sit in and it worked. Now this is slightly different, being that the government is involved, where it shouldn't be. (Is it just me or is this a reoccurring theme these days). Now instead of a school policy you are going to actually have to deal with a legal matter.

I know we don't agree on much, but I agree with Maximus on this issue. More and more girls are becoming oversexed at younger and younger ages and it's all due to the media. Parents try to preach abstinence and birth control if they must, then the media comes along and wipes out all the good the parents try to do by promoting skank whores like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and the like. Now who do you think the kids are going to listen to and emulate??? WTF, now they have bracelets for kids that indicate to other kids their preferred method of gettin' it on! Man, kids have a lot more pressure to fit in nowadays. I really feel sorry for them.

Ever notice how most of the skank whores get their start with Disney? Makes me want to go hmmmmmm.

What really gets me are these fund raiser car washes( alot of times they are to raise money for high school activities) that are put on in our area(perhaps yours too). They get these high school girls dressed in bikinis out on the side of the road holding signs bouncing up and down trying to get business for the car wash.
Can be very distracting while you are trying to drive. Then ypu realize its a high school age girl and you feel bad for even looking in the first place.

Well, that is true and while I see nothing wrong with having car washes in parking lots, I think ALL fundraising should be kept well clear of state and local highways. It does distract drivers, cause traffic jams and all out endangers those participating. You ever see the men and women working along the highway? Yeah, they're trained, insured and dressed to work in traffic. Kids with buckets or posters are not but that is another topic.

Right, the car washes themselves are in parking lots of businesses that are hosting them, the girls in bikinis are the ones standing on the side of the road drawing business into the wash. They aren't in traffic but they can be very distracting.
