French lawmakers on Monday voted to anchor the right to abortion in the country's constitution, in a global first that has garnered overwhelming public support.

A congress of both houses of parliament in Versailles starting at 3:30 pm (1430 GMT) found the three-fifths majority needed for the change after it overcame initial resistance in the right-leaning Senate.

After congress approved the move, France became the only country in the world to clearly protect the right to terminate a pregnancy in its basic law.

France has become the first country in the world to offer explicit protection to women who want to terminate their pregnancy and from now on abortion is a constitutional right.

Abortion is a controversial issue and a subject of heated debates but in Europe is considered a right in most countries and generally permitted up to 12, 14,16 weeks depending on the country and sometimes even late abortions can take place depending on circumstances. Very few countries in Europe restrict or ban abortions.

There was an overwhelming support from the public for the move and polls suggested that around 85% of the French public supported the amendment to the constitution to protect the right of women to terminate a pregnancy. Likewise there was an overwhelming support in the Parliament with French Lawmakers approving the bill in a 780-72 vote and it looks like abortion is widely supported across the political spectrum. Abortion is legal in France since 1975.

Somehow i suspect France is not going anywhere anytime soon.

And if 85% of the public supports the amendment, then it's the will of the people given the majority.

Surely you cannot have an issue with that?

It's a medical procedure. I don't see how a medical procedure raises to the level of a 'constitutional right'. But that's France and they can do what they want with their country. They are going to kill off their children in the womb, and meanwhile the immigrants, both legal and illegal, will continue to flood the country. It's their problem ...

Some say France was well on its way out the door after Verdun.

Something in their spirit broke back then; consequences of which are now apparent.

"Europe" was a fascinating enterprise for many centuries.

Whatever another family decides to do with their lives is up to them, no one else, but its far better that if the difficult decision to abort is taken, that its done safely as oppossed to at home or some backstreet

some numbers to add

Total number of births in France from 2004 to 2022

In 2022, there were 683,000 births in France. In 2021, France was the European country with the second highest number of live births behind Germany. Thus, France had a birth rate of 10.6 births per 1,000 population in 2022, which was one of the highest birth rate in Europe.

The graph does show that there has been a continualy decline since 2010 when it peaked at 802,000

Abortion in France

the records on this page show an average of around 180,000 per year going back to 1975

In Europe things are very different in comparison to the US. Abortion is considered a right and the overwhelming majority of citizens in the various countries of Europe agree that women must have the right to abortion.

Thanks for the links.

Abortion is legal even at the later stages in France if the physicians decide there is a serious risk the pregnancy will cause physical or mental harm to the mother.

The contrast between France and Texas.

In France abortion is a constitutional right and in Texas abortions are banned with the threat of jailing any physicians who may assist in an abortion or even jailing the pregnant women who may seek an abortion.

Indeed.

My two cents, a woman's body is her own concern.

And to think otherwise is rather arrogant in the extreme.

Jailing physicians/doctors who may assist in an abortion will only drive them underground leading to unsafe backroom terminations carried out by people who are less than medical health-trained professionals.

To be fair many of the US States have laws that are similar to the laws regarding abortion in Europe. But the problem is a good number of them have made it almost impossible for women to have an abortion and this will lead to the problems you mentioned. At least traveling to other States is still allowed (!) for the purpose of abortion.

There are certain dimensions to the issue of abortion. If the French thought abortion is murder then they wouldn't support the move by 85%

Well, Women vote, the same as Men, and in recent years in larger turnouts ta boot.

Let's just see how that one works out.

Because making them second-class citizens.

By way of certain states telling them what can or has to grow in their bodies.

Is apt to go down like a lead balloon by my guess.

that's fine. If that's what they want, then super, go nuts. But believe it or not, there are differing opinions out there. And (this may come as a shocker), but some think that abortion is murder, and life is precious. That doesn't mean now that I voiced my opinion everyone has to do things my way, but that everyone will have to deal with their decisions at some point, and I hope everyone is rock solid in their thought process. It could be a big deal later on.

It's just interesting when it's left up to an actual vote from the people in democratic societies they tend to vote to allow women to seek safe abortions.

57 million people in France don't see eye to eye with those who are agaisnt women's reproductive rights.

it's the system in action. Not necessarily the "vote" part, but the molding of public opinion part. You have men foaming at the mouth over making sure women have the right to kill babies. Good for them.
