Strategic Defense System? Star Wars they called it once.

I dont know how capable it is at hitting stuff falling out of orbit.

Me too! The current President has given CHINA the OK to operate in our airspace and even drop Anthrax from a high-level balloon platform, if Xi Eleven wants to.

Theoretically, the likes of the "Brilliant Pebbles" system taken to its logical conclusion could quite possibly have been able to hit targets falling out of orbit.

As to the real capabilities, the tech simply was not there in the 1980s.

Or if it was, it required serious miniaturization, and a viable power source, to make it operate as intended.

Even in this day of age, we lack the necessary portable power sources to make such systems a viable prospect, but they are on the horizon, or so we are led to believe.
