The Gov UK announcement

So having trashed the economy and made millions more destitute in the UK the govenment that caused it all has come up with a plan to further erode people's freedoms in the name of tagetting a shoplifting epidemic.

Never mind that mostly this will be used to target people identiified as being in demos against unpopular laws and suchlike, never mind that it doesn't accurately identify non white people.

The Guardian story on opposition to it

Already groups like Amnesty are calling for it to be gotten rid of.

Defeating it might make the streets way more interesting though.

Why don't they just let some AI's create Skynet and build some Terminators and Robocops and have done with it?

Yep. 1984 was fiction, some seem to think it's an Instruction Manual.

Big Brother is, indeed, watching us?

When you have a population that relies pretty much on the ability to go to a shop to fulfill all their daily and necessity needs, shoplifting will become more of an issue. End stage consumerism.

The government isn't protecting people, it's ultimately protecting big company's who should be the ones putting in measures, but they've clearly lobbied hard enough to get government to step in an do the dirty work.

" Ministry Of Truth " manuals are now being produced from other works.

The Turner Prize-nominated artist David Shrigley has pulped 6,000 copies of Dan Brown's best-seller The Da Vinci Code and republished them as George Orwell's novel 1984.
He hatched the plan back in 2017 when he heard that an Oxfam shop in Swansea had stopped accepting any more copies of the conspiracy thriller.

Pub watch never used any software like that, the photos were distributed among all the member places for the security people to look through, rather like how lots of shops share pics of problem shoplifters and suchlike.

Similar story with the railway, it was not an automated system, the processing ppower just did not exist to cut humans out of the loop
