Luna-25 launched last week on the 10th and entered lunar orbit on Wednesday 16th , during preparations for its transfer to its pre-landing orbit today Roscosmos has said the lander had an "abnormal situation" but they are working to analysing the situation , no other information has been released other than that.
Luna-25 is scheduled for a soft landing at the Lunar South Pole on Monday with India's Chandrayaan-3 scheduled to land on Wednesday , which one if either manage to land successfully remains to be seen.

It's targeting a historic touchdown at the moon's south pole on Monday, but appears to have run into unspecified trouble while preparing for a pre-landing orbit.

Russia's space agency, Roskosmos, said its specialists were analysing the situation.

No further details have been provided.

Snapshot taken by Luna-25 of the Zeeman crater on the far side of the moon or an Alien base depending on how you looks at it.

Common sense says it's a software glitch....but we all know it's aliens.

It's always aliens.

This has great conspiracy theory potential.
Secret space war over lunar resources maybe,or something to do with Ukraine?

John Lear would have loved this one.

The Russian space program has been sliding for years. In the days of the USSR they were a real consideration, unfortunately they never really outgrew the life/material is cheap mentality of those days. How many times did their space station catch on fire, for instance? IIRC they thought they outsmarted us when we spent thousands developing a pen to write in space where they just used pencils...graphite core pencils. They have a dumb luck and persistence mentality about these things, which doesn't work to impress many when they're not a near peer space agency anymore. Not to be political but look at how they do other things lately for an example.

I'd bet anything it's just a glitch or some missed finer point otherwise, their mechanisms tend to be rather foolproof. Space is not a place to be when you find the wrinkles in the rest of the machine, however. Just a guess, nothing really would surprise me in any case.

For the record I hope they succeed and share all the data with the world, it's very interesting and would be a great accomplishment.

I'd be annoyed too if they forgot the Nan Bread and are 38 hours late with the order.

"Chinese next time lads?"

Obviously them pesky Jewish secret space lasers responsible for the probes """abnormal situation"".

On a more serious note, i hope the situation is resolved, and all goes well for the remainder of the mission.

What is 'historic' about a repeat of something we did in the late 60s?

Im embarrassed we have to rediscover how to accomplish this task.

They're attempting a landing in the South Pole region of the Moon which hasn't been done before.

I would expect every mission lands in a new place, no?

By the time we stopped going, people weren't even paying any attention. And now we have to rediscover it.

I just don't find that historic in the least.

It's embarrassing, we should already have the moon pretty well explored and a base of operations.

My understanding is that achieving a polar orbit can be somewhat different, or harder to accomplish, which is where the problem may have arisen.

And like gortex says CoyoteAngels this is a first given the location.

They need a reason to return and remain there.

The Helium 3 might be in demand at some point in the not too distant which may make exploration and mining a real prospect.

I hope they verify the US flag is up there and the lunar lander and junk left behind. It will be good to dispel that CT

NASA found indications of water ice at the South Pole meaning that if it's there it could be an ideal location for a Moon Base.

Given that every single argument claiming that NASA faked the Moon landings has been discredited, it would be rather redundant, not that i don't appreciate the point.

Our moon is pretty big though and i don't think the probe is in an orbit where that would be viable.

Might be nice all the same as you suggest but even if the Russian probe could somehow verify the landings and US flag, would the diehard disbelievers not simply claim fake pics?

Probably, but it would convince many that we really go there using sliderules and tincans.

And yet they managed to build an atomic bomb and nuclear submarines with those very same to similar slide rules, tin cans and technology.

edit on 19-8-2023 by andy06shake because: (no reason given)
