This seems to be an interesting development in the Geopolitical tapestry, Blinken during a visit to get New Zealand to join a military alliance, was told in no uncertain terms by the NZ foreign minister, that it will never happen. We might be seeing NZ going Neutral in the rising tensions, while their main trading partner Australia asks America how high to jump. The last time New Zealand got stroppy, they had to import Ladas for Dairy produce from Russia. While at the present time trade with China seems to have no disruptions and if speed is taken into account there seems to be an improvement in shipping goods from China to New Zealand. Although affirming continued friendship between America and NZ the answer was not what America wanted to hear.

I love hearing how other countries are standing up to Biden's agenda; now if only American citizens would only do the same we might stand a chance of getting beyond the mess this administration has caused.

This isn't a new development.

New Zealand has had a nuclear free policy since 1984 and further ratified in 1987 in the 'New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act, 1987'

New Zealand is an independent country and will do as New Zealand thinks is right for New Zealand, as it should.

New Zealand has never been scared to step up to the plate when the time is right, I suspect that won't change.

Its a Russian type/make of car.

The LADA was and remains the most mass-produced automotive brand in Russia. The brand`s market share is more than 20%, and the fleet of the LADA cars holds a 30% share in the Russian car fleet. The leaders of the Russian market are the LADA Granta and LADA Vesta models.

My Uncle Patrick used to say the same to something similar about his Citroen 2CV.

Everyone forgets that they were originally Italian, and actually pretty bulletproof in a no-frills sort of way. They will still be going when most of the others have stopped.

New Zealand was always going to say no. It doesn't change anything. AUKUS is about building and operating a new class of nuclear submarine for Australia. New Zealand has not allowed nuclear powered or armed ships into their waters since the 1980s, and aren't about to start now. It doesn't change their status as allies, or our relationship with them.

I felt some respect to NZ for standing up against the USA.
I then immediately lost all that respect for their stance on nuclear power.

It's #ing stupid. Nuclear is our absolute best energy source. Solar and Wind are intermittent power and require the mass construction of batteries to make it work at civilization level, which makes them worse than fossil fuels when you account for all the waste of the solar panels, the windmill blades, and the dead batteries. None of that stuff lasts forever. It all goes to a landfill eventually.

Nuclear waste can be recycled and put to use again in nuclear power plants. The only reason we don't is because the USA stupidly banned nuclear recycling back when Carter was in office.

There is no such thing as "nuclear waste" there is only nuclear material emitting energy. We can use all of it to generate power.

The ban on nuclear recycling is a purely political decision that is an obstacle to the development of our civilization. If not for this ban the USA might have ditched fossil fuels decades earlier. We could all be driving EV's right now.

IMO this is a deliberate act of sabotage. It's preventing humanity from climbing the Kardashev scale.

If we ever plan on leaving the Solar System, we aren't going to be powering our spacecraft with anything other than nuclear power. Fossil fuels, solar, wind, geothermal, none of this # is going to work. Only nuclear power will work.

It is easy to be wise in hindsight But NZ has plenty of hydropower and exists on some pretty active fault zones. It was banned before Chenoble and Fukushima. The coal reserves are pretty massive as well. So it doesn't need what would be an international conglomerate holding the power card.
