The Spanish moss was swaying from the ancient oaks as if they were dancing. The history these trees have seen, if they could speak it would be amazing. It was the middle of winter but snow hadn’t been seen in over a hundred year in those parts of Minnesota. She walked under the canopy of trees breathing in the cool air from the outdoor air conditioner generators. Her long black hair shimmering in the wind. She could hear the leaves behind her crunching and getting closer. She turned around and there he was. Standing about six feet tall, the first thing she saw were his eyes. Those blue eyes, as deep as the sea, with little speckles of gray surrounded by the blackest of night eyelashes. She didn’t even have a moment to think before he grabbed her in his strong embrace and stole a kiss. A single tear ran down her face.

It wasn’t even a minute before the P-bots were there. That was a nickname everyone made up for them, Police bots. It was now illegal to mate with a person outside of your assigned DNA group. It didn’t matter how much you loved someone, it just wasn’t possible. People tried, but the cameras implanted in their eyes and brains gave them away every time. Mating was considered any non authorized human touch. The P-bot grabbed him to take him to the detentionary to recite the rules of human society. He only had two more chances before they recycled him. He was convinced this world he was living in was unnatural.

It was a grueling two months in the detentionary but he was finally out. He left and headed to the valley. The valley was the only place humans could go and not be surveilled. It wasn’t really a valley either, it was an old bunker lined with steel that was covered by trains and flanked by old swampy ponds. There were only a few places left like this. That’s where he first met her. This time would be different, he planned on joining the Winter. The Winter was the name for a rouge group that was fighting against the P-bots. The only chance of beating them would be in the winter when weather was unpredictable and sometimes communication was down due to the heat. Nobody had ever actually celebrated real winter with snow or real cold, or Christmas. It was only something they learned in about in human history class. They wondered did people really live like that and get to pick their own mates back then or was it all a lie.

The End

Picking a mate... sometimes just one expectation ruins EVERYTHING maybe stealing the kiss was as unexpected as the tear... the tearing at the heart when more expectations come pouring down like waterfalls? Maybe it's better to just keep hanging around like the moss old and grey until the Spanish come collecting it for the inquisition it's missed youthful however it may have been once it began.

A dystopian tale I hope never comes to fruition. But as short story fiction I really liked it.

You wrote; "He only had two more chances before they recycled him."

No human contact unless dna matched? I'd have been horse meat long before this time period.

Thanks for an interesting submission and good luck in the contest,
Johnny

Once in the bunker he threw caution to the wind and infused himself with nano-bots for strength, quickness, and intelligence. He then left to go and tear some police bots apart by his own hands. Nothing and no one would keep him from her even if it meant he had to die first.

The first pair of P-Bots he encountered he closed and leaped over the first one while grabbing what passed for a head and ripped it off sensors and all. The second P-Bot let lose a stream of fire but as he was protected by the body of the first P-Bot he was uninjured as he spun around faster than the functional P-Bot could track. The second P-Bot was scrap metal before the first bot fell to the ground. Two can play at this game was his thought as he looked for more Bots to challenge.

The hot wire landed directly on his arm making a horrible sizzling sound. It burned so bad, but he laughed. At least he could still feel things and be human. The other quickly gathered. Some threw oil on the P-Bots, while others flashed infared lights at all the sensors. The Winter Clan only had taken out a few P-Bots but it still garnered some hope.

One man down. The air was filled with the scent of burning flesh, hot oil, and burnt plastic. They all knew what was waiting outside for them...
