This is big news BUT...

....BUT, it will ultimately die down and be swiftly resolved.

Remember when Iran captured TEN US sailors? No great big war occurred. No third world war ensued.

Ultimately, the only "wars" we'll see this year are wars...of words - and words alone (and probably the odd sanction here and there).

Yawn.

Iran has seized a second tanker, US official says
From CNN's Barbara Starr

Iran has also seized a second tanker, the Liberian-flagged MV Mesdar, according to a US official. Two more US officials tell CNN that, according to maritime intelligence reports, the indication is the Mesdar has been seized. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced earlier that its navy has captured a British-flagged tanker ‘Stena Impero’ in the Strait of Hormuz. The order of seizure of the two ships isn’t clear at this time.

Looks like things are getting even more "interesting"

What do you expect? The sanctions aren't exactly sunflowers and roses...

Wasn't Iran satisfied with the 150 billion dollars we gave them 4 years ago?

The US and its allies should simply get rid of Iran's leadership by sending in strategically targeted drones.

Screw the drones. Cruise missle, and F35 time.

How about no.

This is not the nineties or the noughties.

2019 is a different time. Less escalation, more de-escalation and imposing more sanctions is not necessarily the best course of action...

Neither side has an overwhelming naval combat force. The problem is Iran can strike at anything in the strait’s from shore bases. That’s going to make it difficult for the UK to project power.

UK is a NATO ally, meaning that they're not just standing with their own national firepower supporting them. If Iran actually did attack a UK freighter, that's one thing... if Iran attacks (or counter attacks, truthfull) a UK military vessel, then Iran could easily find the United States' boot so far up their ass it would be tickling the Ayatollah's uvula.

Excellent point.

The best way to deal with this is a coordinated multinational overwhelming response.

The sticking point here is probably the fact that they now have in excess of 50 hostages, whose death would almost be assured by military action.

And the ten US sailors in 2016? They died too, did they?

It's pretty ballsy of Iran to go after British assets. Don't they remember what happened to Gaddafi and his country?

But seriously - war drums are beginning to play ....

Not that I'm aware of. What is your point?

Some latest propaganda BS coming from the Iranians on this:

The Tasnim news agency quoted the Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran as saying: "We received some reports on the British oil tanker, Stena Impero, causing problems.

"We asked the military forces to guide this tanker towards Bandar Abbas port to have the required investigations carried out."

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard-affiliated news agency said the tanker was seized for breaking three regulations: shutting down its GPS; going through the exit of the Strait of Hormuz rather than the entrance; and ignoring warnings.

i disagree, they are looking to provoke a full out war, because their religious prophecies state that it will lead to the final battle and the rise to power of the The twelfth “hidden” Imam, Mohammed al-Mahdi A.K.A. the antichrist... well its their messiah, but everyone else's antichrist... funny how that all comes together lol. supposedly even Jesus himself will be with him, but muslim instead of jewish? and will serve as his deputy...hahaha yeah sure...

They believe the way to hasten the coming of the Twelfth Imam is to annihilate Israel (which they call the “Little Satan”), and the United States (which they call the “Great Satan”).

Note: only shia muslims believe that, Sunni's reject it as it is not in the Quran

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but we are not dealing with a 21st century western culture here.

If the Iranians were willing to operate within the acceptable norms of the modern world, that would be one thing. That, however, is not the case.

As I have stated previously, this goes well beyond oil tankers, at this point. They openly support terrorism both within, and outside the region. They are responsible for attacks on Israeli territory. They have now attacked, mined, or committed piracy in international waters, on multiple occasions. Iran is pushing because they want sanctions lifted. At some point, someone will push back.

I hear what you're saying. So what do you think will be the outcome of this? Large-scale military conflict?

Based on recent previous events (e.g. 2016 incident), nothing much will come of all of this. No conflict. Just more words and the odd sanction here and there.

Depends on what Iran does. Iran is the driving force for every action. They control what happens with their actions.

I predict that they will use the "seizure" as a bargaining chip and eventually release both the crew(s) AND the vessel(s) - unharmed and undamaged.

No war. No carrier strike group. No F35s. No drone strikes. Nothing. All a lot of hubbub but nothing much after.

One of the two tankers may have been released.

Twitter

1 of those 2 has just been released & is now moving away from Iran. Lots of rumors floating the net regarding other ships, but nothing else has been confirmed.

Looks like it might be the Mesdar, not the Stena Impero

Twitter

Mesdar has updated its AIS & is currently on the move again

No large scale military conflict. I dont believe western leaders, or the citizenry would be on board for that.

There is no doubt in my mind however, that cruise missle, and air strikes could completely destroy Irans air defense system, command and control structure, and nuclear program with ease.

I'm not, necessarily, advocating for that, because of collateral damage, and casualties, but if thay is to be ultimately avoided, Iran's leadership is going to have to change the path they are on.

I wonder how this latest situation is going to effect the Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe case

Relations were already strained from this situation.

Could this make it worse or bring it to a swifter conclusion?

Is this situation against UK tankers sanctions and "tit-for-tat" related or also in part due to this case?
