It's called "cowpunk" and it's freaking awesome when done right.
Lookup some of the main players' offerings like
"The Legendary Shack Shakers"
"Hank WIlliams 3"
"Ghoultown"
and if you want to hit the history of the genre, give Hasil Adkins, GG Allin**, and Pete Berwick a listen.

**Warning: GG Allin is definitely NOT everyone's cup of tea.

When someone says "punk" i always think first of the Sex Pistols, The Jam. Dead Kennedys yes, but personally i wouldnt say the other 3 are punk.

I saw Adkins in the mid-80s. It was a good show.

Wow! Thanks for the memories. I lived in Minneapolis when I was in my 20s. Saw Husker Du several times. The 'Metal Circus' album is a masterpiece.

Never heard of the Stepmothers, but I liked them at first listen. When visiting L.A. relatives in the 80s, I was lucky to
have seen The Dream Syndicate, The Flesheaters, and The Gun Club.

Let's not forget that all these great bands probably never would have existed (western, UK, euro, and even eastern) if it weren't for the Ramones

I liked those, I absolutely love Psychobilly and Rockabilly stuff!

Not everyone's cup a tea but I have to give the Queers a shout, I know they just sound like the Ramones (like a lot of bands) but they are so fun to listen to!

I like most styles of Punk though, Punk, 50s/60s and Hardcore (the European EDM genre not rock) are what I grew up on!
