I agree. Those who we are taught to trust, actually “disciplined” into trusting.


For someone like me who’s questioned everything since I was a child, it’s like vindication


For most, I assume, it’s throwing them into a very uncomfortable place, of questioning everything when they’re not accustomed to it.

Having learned to swim in these waters, it’s kind of surreal to watch.

The gymnastics thing first caught my attention because of how big a fan I was growing up

Sadly Shame and "respect for your elders" are two of the major reasons a lot of this goes under reported..

Heck I just was talking to my mom about my gym teacher and she said " I never heard that story! I'd have raised hell"


Years later and she only now knows because I was discussing this thread with her..

Parents, do not second guess your gut feeling. Even if it seems silly.
Your gut it right! It is truly a sixth sense. I'll give you another word of advice. Pedophiles are usually the LAST people you would suspect. One of my teachers was a pedophile. He had a daughter my age, and was one of our teachers. All the kids and parents loved him. I come home from school and my parents sat me down and told me he was arrested for molesting boys at our school. Basically what I'm saying is a lot of time they are not who you would guess them to be. I have talked to a lot (seriously a lot) of men that have also been abused by female teachers. I know some joke about this, but it really isn't funny and has long lasting emotional consequences.

There have been over 110 million American participants in the boy scouts since its founding in 1910.

So 8k reports in the nearly 80 years investigated isnt exactly what I would call an out of control problem.

Is this argument made because you believe there are more pressing issues and more important lives at stake that we should focus our energy and awareness on, or are you just making the argument for the sake of making an argument?

I can’t ever understand why when someone makes mention of abuse being brought to light and justice, there are such a staggering amount of responses insinuating that to even address it is not worth the effort.

Don’t take this as some sort of attack; that’s not why I participate in these discussions, I genuinely would just like to understand why so many are so “meh” about issues like this, and try to “play down their impact”

Seriously..

"Guys there is a pattern of hiding known child abuse But it's really no big deal..It's only .7% out of 110 million "participants"


Exactly how many boys are there per authority figures.?






It's not all "participants.."

It's the small pool of Authority figures

That changes the math a bit..

It's not just 8K kids either. Some of these people have been with the scouts for decades. Imagine, 8K X 100 kids or more...
That 8K number probably isn't right either.

Fair point. I tend to believe things like that happen everyday and over a multitude of issues as well, I guess think when it comes to direct, intentional human abuse, I find myself having less tolerance than in other blown out of proportion issues
Like the current measles outbreak, for example.

Thank you for a respectful response. I guess maybe it’s just the particular subject matter stirs heavier emotions.
