The Chinese are trying to overcome the signature issues with having extremely BVRAAMs, not sure what other aerial assets they are planning to incorporate to supplement this but that seems to be the plan for now.

The chinese also stated the only reason they went with canards was a misunderstanding with what lift to drag ratio the US got with the F-22. They thought it was far, far better and couldn't figure out another way to get anything remotely as good. So they went with the canard configuration. from the sounds of things, they probably will not do that again.

It is built to a different set of requirements. I bet it cleans the Raptor's clock (aerodynamically) in supersonic ranges of the envelope. There are some open studies from quite a way back that look very similar weighing pros and cons.

The Big Shrimps, those who are semi official leaks and sources for the Sino centric internet, have stated a two seater J-20 will be flying this year. Let's see if they are right.

Of canards & rear control surfaces torsioning an airframe that big at supersonic speeds? I'll take the Raptor for aerodynamics & sustainability.

Bet you'll find your moment arm is a lot larger on the J-20 design than the Raptor, and it's giving positive lift for pitch control instead of negative, which helps sustainability. Where the Raptor will (almost certainly) have an advantage is thrust, but that is independent of the two configurations.

Either it has some serious ferry range with that layout or the internal tanks are itty bitty.

That looks a bit heinous lol. Not in terms of aesthetics, but fuel capacity. Wow lol.

Hard to find close up photos of the right side but it's there just under the canopy.

Even J-8 can in flight refuel.

It might have inflight refueling capability but with very limited A2A tanking assets in the PLAAF, its not going to be able to utilize it anyway.

An interesting 3d model you can interact with for the J-20:

The Raptor doesn't have a helmet display.

They're building about 30 or so a year right now. LRIP is probably the best description. They will have as many J-20s as we have Raptors PDQ.

I'm concerned China is further along than analysts believe and they'll mass produce J-20s to darken the sky around China.
