Earlier this month, according to the Japanese government, a South Korean warship locked its fire control radar onto a Japanese P-1 that was on a routine patrol inside the Japanese EEZ. South Korea denies the incident, and says that while assisting a North Korean fishing boat that was in trouble, an optical camera saw the P-1 approaching. They also said that the Japanese aircraft flew directly over the warship at low level.

Today Japan released video from the aircraft that appears to show the warship locking onto the aircraft multiple times. The aircraft radioed the Korean ship multiple times with no response from the ship. South Korea says that the video shows the aircraft performing a "threatening low-altitude flight" over the ship, and doesn't show what the Japanese claim it does.

If it went hot who do you think the US would back? Neither are part of NATO but both are allies to the US. If Japan is attacked I think NATO has to back them per the WWII surrender agreement.

Well this is interesting when considering there is now peace in the Korean Peninsula, old hates reigniting?

There might be peace on the Peninsula, but China is still the 800 pound gorilla. The hate never really went away, they've just been willing to work with us, who just happens to be working with the other at the same time.

That's a really tough question. I think we'd step in before it got to that point honestly. They're both long time, extremely valuable allies.

I would hope so. It could get really ugly if North and South Korea made a pact against Japan. That could bring China into the mess also.

Considering Japan's offensive capabilities are extremely limited per the surrender for 99 years... We would be forced to take Japan's side.

But as zaphod said, I'm sure we'd nip it in the bud. The South Pacific is a theater I imagine we'd avoid at all costs.

Capitalism wants South Korea and Japan to prosper.

North Korea is the elephant in the room. Ideally most players want them to stay autonomous. South Korea cannot absorb them comfortably.

A Psychic once mentioned that Moon Jae In is the reincarnation of Mussolini and his goal is to conquer Japan. Now I don't know if what the guy is saying is true but when hearing about the tension between Japan and South South Korea, it makes one wonder if the guy has a point.

Moon’s past life was the infamous Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He won the presidency with flying colors, but few can see the ambitions that lie hidden behind his friendly facade.

“We will arm the 80 million citizens of our newly reunified Korea with nukes and missiles, to conquer Japan – a country that cannot even amend its Constitution,” said the guardian spirit of Moon Jae-in in a spiritual interview conducted by Master Ryuho Okawa, founder of Happy Science, just 2 days after the elections.

Master Okawa has given over 700 spiritual messages, but this one was exceptional: Moon’s guardian spirit hid the truth of his past life, and continued to be insincere. Happy Science had to do 3 spiritual messages with the same spirit before he would reveal the truth.

“I am Mussolini, and the current president Moon,” he finally admitted. Indeed, he turned out to be the Italian dictator who created the fascist movement out of the ashes of WWI.

Moon’s guardian spirit laid out his plan to reunify Korea and then colonize Japan.

“Our mission is to destroy Japan,” Moon’s guardian spirit boldly declared, saying he was born again to take revenge for WWII, and to complete his ambitions.

“We will turn Japan into a semi-slave state to use their people as labourers for our profits. That’s the sort of class society I want to make.”

The Japanese know this Well , and Dread the Possible Implications of it . Even China will see this Obvious Threat to it's Economic Survival . Korea makes the BEST " Stuff " Right Now ...

The tension between Korea and Japan has always been far more cultural than economic. One of the reasons tensions have gone up lately is the issue of WWII sex slaves has been raised again.

The way you say that makes it seem that the unification could be so easy.

The population of South Korea is 50~ million.

North is 25 million.

North Korea has a gdp that is 1/40~ of the South.

A fair comparison would be if the US absorbed Mexico who has about half our population and 1/20 of our gdp.

It would be detrimental.

Keep in mind that North Koreans are brainwashed. It would take generations to assimilate them into the west.

Unfortunately trump is a wild card.

No one can say for sure if he would help our allies or not.

Congress still has the power to vote on war even though the executive branch has circumvented that since the age of terrorism.

It could be standard practice to lock on to an aircraft coming close to a navy ship. I don't think anything was meant to happen, just a warning. Nobody shot at anybody. I think if a military aircraft came close to one of our ships, our ships would lock on it too. Japan would probably do the same thing, just in case.

That's just it though, you don't go straight to radar lock. You start by warning them over the radio and using optics to identify them. Being in the Japanese EEZ they had to think this was a Japanese aircraft checking on things.

According to the South Koreans they used an optical system to track them. That means they identified it as Japanese visually and knew it wasn't a threat. There was no reason to escalate like this.

Too much “historical/traditional ancient hate” in that area, one way or another they will jump at each other and possibly causing WW3 for sure.
