There's a theory now that the hole wasn't caused by a micrometeorite, but is rather a manufacturing defect that was quietly patched up while still on earth, and had come loose while in space.

Kapton tape was used for this hole. That's the same tape used on outside of the Apollo LM to hold the insulation, und kapton film is used in other space/satellite applications. Kapton film can withstand extreme temperatures and extreme swings of temperatures.

Having said that, I bet a 2 mm hole on the inside could potentially be patched with duct tape, but why not use Kapton if it's available, although the Kapton film's thermal properties are probably an overkill for interior spacecraft use.

That is a major "oopsie!" for Energia (the manufacturer of Russian rockets and spacecraft), and it comes on the heels of a recent spying scandal in Roscosmos.

I had never heard of Kapton tape, looks like a really impressive material. Looking at the photos on Google, I just suddenly realised this is that very "yellow tape" that I use at work! (I deal with chips that go into plastic cards). Kinda cool to realise you're dealing with Apollo and other spacecraft material on a daily basis.
