Snaps have indeed been discontinued by the American Licorice Company. Relatively recently as a matter of fact. There are, however, alternatives that I'm happy to say are almost identical to the original

Although they can be a bit pricey.

Exhibit B:

If anyone needs help locating hard to find candy, just ask. I'm actually on mailing lists for sites that carry obscure candies haha

My Dad remembers candy stores, coming home from with a paper bag filled with a pound of candy.

"Penny a pound".

The store had jars lined up, you could reach in and grab a handful of this and then that and oh, those... and walk out with a pound of your favorites for a whole penny.

As far as what I recall, the candy bars backwhen I was a kid had real chocolate, were huge, cost a quarter.

Hersheys, Three Musketeer, Milky Way Bar...

They still make them but they are smaller, cost more than a dollar, are filled with fodder.

Can't eat them anymore anyway.

Pink Canada mints. (wintergreen)
They also came in white (peppermint) and green (spearmint).
Old Time Candy Co.
Oh, now that I see them at the link above....
Candy Buttons, that came stuck to a sheet of paper.... but they sucked. Barely sweet and utterly tasteless.

I want to thank-you for this trip down memory lane.I even have
one of those old-fashioned candy dishes in my living-room.It is
kept filled with miniature candy bars.
During Easter season,I buy Brach's jelly beans and separate the
black ones for my husband.Halloween,I buy candy corn from same
company as jelly beans.Christmas season,I can't find that old fashion
hard candy mix anymore.I have seen it for sale in this one catalog,
it is very pricey though.

I believe that Brachs has the best candy corn.

Speaking of Easter candy, I used to get Ferrara Pan chocolate covered eggs for Easter as a child. There were coconut, creme and fruit. They came in a box ehat had a cellophane window in the front so you could see the egg inside. They used to be 3-4 inches long, but I think that they are smaller now.
The fruit ones sucked imo.

I live in LA, and on the drive to Vegas there is a place on the side of the road off of Pear Blossom High Way, near the state line, and they have ALL Of the old candies, and yes they even still had candy ciggies, of coarse the last time I stopped there was 3 years ago. Going to Vegas in the next month or two. I will totally stop and pick up some candy that we don't see around in the mainstream anymore. Takes some pics and post em here on ATS. Beemans Gum and clove gum they also have.

I don't buy candy corn or jelly beans from any other company.
I can eat some candy corn and they don't seem to make my
sugar spike much.
I remember those eggs as well and my parents would buy them
for us at Easter.I didn't care much for the peanut butter ones,
I didn't like the taste.I got spoiled by the Reeces brand eggs
and couldn't tolerate any other.

I've mentioned it before, but during WW2 they candied carrots.

The kids ate them up... they tried a social experiment to see how a modern community could survive on the rations they had at the time, and the kids absolutely HATED them.

But as for old people candy, I really would prefer a sweeter candy. Old people just taste like potatoes...

*CANDIES ARE STILL AVAILABLE!

So many named thru-out this thread are still found in old time candy stores. They can be found.

I've seen everyone in this thread I'm sure in the last 6 months. If the old company doesn't still make them.. Other companies still do in original pkg. and formulas.
