It should come as no surprise. The handwriting was on the wall, even in 1864 when Twain wrote of this event for the SF Morning Call. Even his editor, Mr. Barnes, saw it, calling it a 'prejudice'. None the less, profit trumped truth and political correctness trumped justice.

Nothing has changed.

No you just dont understand how the press worked in 1800s.In the early 1800s, newspapers were largely for the elite and took two forms – mercantile sheets that were intended for the business community and contained ship schedules, wholesale product prices, advertisements and some stale foreign news, and political newspapers that were controlled by political parties or their editors as a means of sharing their views with elite stakeholders. Journalists reported the party line and editorialized in favor of party positions. This doesnt change until 1880s as independent newspapers form reporting local news. These papers were cheaper often half the price of regular news papers. They reported issues important to its readers and not designed to influence opinion.

Your comparing news papers from then which didnt report news but were political brochures to today. You could argue that the press is motivated by politics but they re not produced by a political party. Your arguing that the press today is controlled by democrats and republicans and free press doesnt exist. Because in the 1860s there was no free press.

This is a stunning revelation of politics and media manipulation. The truth is now upon us, for all to see, once and for all. The cold, hard, facts of the modern day in western culture.

I hope you enjoyed this 'breaking' side trip back in history, and I hope (pray actually) we can all learn from it. If for no other reason than...tomorrow's breaking news headlines may not be what they seem.

Best to all, and comments welcome (as always)!

The story is about something that is not published though, it's not 'fake news'
The Guardian for instance have a saying, "There are stories we wouldn't touch with a bargepole" Yet and all, some of their reporting has been really damaging for governments for instance, and not without consequences to themselves either. So just how bad are those 'items' that never go to print?
As for Fake news, that's often something of a perception these days...follow the party dogma, unless someone can prove it is made up, when it then becomes known propaganda or rhetoric in a curious mitigation of..our side did it, so it's okay...while seldom is that afforded to 'the other side' where it is regarded that anything that is proven wrong, is 'fake news'...regardless of the circumstance.

Thing is, you read something, what is written it's not necessarily your truth, it's somebody's else's story.
