Sugar. It is sweet, addictive, and if you consume enough of it, long enough, it will kill you over a long period of time as your health takes a downward spiral. What a perfect way to manipulate an economy. The sugar industry is subsidized by the US Federal Government. The feds protect certain interest groups by stomping out the competition with subsidies. It is the antithesis of Capitalism. Crony Capitalism is Socialism dressed in sheep's wool.

Here's a short video to explain how Big Sugar works. It basically works the same way as Big Pharma and Big Oil.

Anytime the government gets involved in the free market (like pushing subprime loans while deregulating banks) the market is no longer free. It becomes a prison market. The Crony Cartels become the wardens and the consumer become the prisoner.

Now, extract the basic principles that prop up Big Sugar, and apply them to Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Insurance, etc.

Refined sugar is added to almost all processed foods. This trend started after dietary fats were demonized by specially interest groups within the medical associations. Now, chances are (unless you go out of your way to eat healthy) every meal you ingest has a dose of added refined sugar. Three meals a day plus three snacks and beverages over a long period of time is all you need to become insulin resistance. Insulin resistance then, coupled with fat soluble vitamin deficiencies, throws the entire metabolism out of order. By the time you reach your mid 30s you become pre-diabetic, pre-hypertensive, with a fatty liver and high cholesterol.

You then go to the doctor. This is where the downward spiral begins to accelerate. Your doctor is likely brainwashed or paid off by the Pharm Reps, so you're put on blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol drugs. The drugs come with side effects. They block calcium absorption. They cause you to lose potassium. The statins are depriving your body of fat, so your brain function and hormone production takes a hit. All the while, your insulin resistance is now only getting much worse at a much faster pace. Finally, synthetic insulin and other injectable drugs are needed to manage blood glucose. The risk of cancer, heart disease, and dementia (insulin resistance in the brain) begin to increase, and the body begins to develop autoimmune disorders.

Millions of Americans live this reality every single day, and the patients are developing these problems at younger ages. It is primarily a problem of personal responsibility....poor lifestyle choices. Every individual is responsible for their own decisions, but the Crony system is feeding off of this, while the Government encourages it. Now its to the point that the medical system is overwhelmed with patients who don't understand the principles of personal responsibility or moderation. As a result, costs have gone through the roof, so third party payers had to get involved, which only threw gasoline on the already raging fire.

Now the Federal Government is burrowing its slimy tentacles even deeper into the medical system with the ACA, and the poor ignorant sheeple are begging for a Single Payer system...because all they know is what Government tells them.

So what is my point? Is Big Sugar the enemy???

No!

Big Sugar is simply one of the many heads of the hydra.

The root problem is not Capitalism, it is Government disruption of Capitalism that destroys the mutually beneficial, symbiotic effect of the free market.

Look around you and know that we are building our own prison.

The problems with our country are not rocket science. The lobbyists force the politicians to pass laws creating cartels and monopolies in exchange for campaign financing. The CEOs own the lobbyists. And the lobbyists own the politicians. Money talks everything else is BS. The corporations have representation. The citizen does not. Essentially what we have in this country is corporations ARE the government.

"Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." Benito Mussolini

Well said.

I fear there are few means of recourse. The problems have been kicked down the road for so long we are now reaching the end of the road. As planned.

For that exact reason, I think we need an amendment that separates business and state.

Yeah, when the kids come this Halloween, give them some bean sprouts, carrots, apples, rather than the usual sugar drenched candy. See how that works out.

The disruption by government is caused by certain capitalists buying it and using it to defeat other capitalists.

High fructose corn syrup is what is added to the bulk of all foods processed. Sugar is out, fake is in.

The premise of your theory that a luxury commodity like sugar matters in the grand scheme of things is off by over half a century.

Plus the few large corps that now own large swaths of processed food manufacturing have devised many many different names for the different sugars. To hide them.

Great post, and agreed.

I have very bad hypothyroidism that's not 100% controlled by meds. That contributes to a poor metabolism leading also to a high cholesterol. The doctor put me on Statins for it and it was a miserable experience all the way around. The Statins made me even more exhausted and the pain in my back and legs from it was some of the worst I've ever had. Combine that with the fact that he put me on the name brand version and the price for that brand was high. I stopped taking them and never had the script refilled. I will not take something that makes me feel far worse than I did before.

We're being medicated into a poor state as we're inundated with nasties like Flouride (which contributes to a decline in thyroid function,) High Fructose Corn Syrup, and any number of preservatives and dyes. Soy, which is a filler in many processed foods, also is bad for your thyroid in large amounts. Seeing a pattern there?

Welcome to the dumbing down of the citizenry.

The corporations have representation. The citizen does not.

That says it all.

The people have more power than what we think. The problem is we don't unite and send a clear message to Washington. Keeping the political division keeps the voice of the people from having power and influence. Instead of conservatives attacking liberals (which we see everyday on ATS) and liberals attacking conservatives, we need to look past the political labels and start voting all incumbents, republican and democrats out of office. A citizens movement should be formed that demands term limits, campaign finance reform and an end to lobbying, That would be a great start.
