The EU cannot allow a destabilised Spain. A destabilised Spain could upend the whole debt house of cards and threaten the EU project itself.

Whatever the central Spanish authority needs to do in order to regain control will be supported by the EU.

Separatist movements across Europe are about to find out how much the EU cares about them.

Well at least if nothing else their independence this time around has lasted longer than it did previously this year.

Admittedly 8 seconds isn't a hard time to beat.

And yet, the majority was in support of the referendum.

en.wikipedia.org...

The voter turnout was expected to be low, given the brutal oppression and all that.

But this was a vote by the Catalonian parliament not the public , I think it's more a case of the usual suspects trying to force the issue which is why those who took part were few in number.

The EU was involved in destabilising the former Yugoslavia and actively encouraged the minorities over there to revolt in Bosnia then Kosovo. Surely what's good for the goose is good for the gander?

Catalonia has a huge role in Spain's economy. If they get independent they will lose the EU membership automatically. How is that good for the EU?

They've already started building one.

As shown here

It's been in the works for a long time. 1993 apparently.

Anyone who supports the EU is a traitor to his own country.

While I agree with you can I just change this sentence a tiny bit, Anyone who supports what the EU has became is a traitor to his own country...

Also this EU army, how will that work with individual members NATO membership?

Madrid has declared Catalonia's bid for indepndence illegal.

All thats left is the dying. Roll tanks.

Reminds me of Soviet style repression of Hungary. Only this time its in the West, in the Big Happy European Union.

Which seems to be standing by, letting it all go down because they are on Madrid's side. Independence, autonomy, self determination, whats that?

Finally we can agree. This has been handled by Spain probably worse than Russia with Crimeria. I Bet no one from the West will recognize Catalonia nor will they Condemn Spain's Response to it.

Watch Russia demand an Emergency UN Security Council meeting on this.

Self Determination?? We can't have any of that.

It sonly self determination when the entire people speak as one. Apparently over half DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE. W ehave to stop the minority from rolling over the majority in Elections.

Except that many people didn't want to get a beating just for heading to the polls. Maybe, eventually. Who would've thunkt! Nice spin though, lets just deny the fact that another police state went full blown berserk again. Well. Played.

Well the end goal of all this is a unified EU, the individual members simply will not exist anymore.

Until then:

The European Corps is not subordinate to any other military organisation.[1] It is deployed on the authority of the Common Committee representing the member nations,[9][10] the Chief of Defense, and the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

NATO has no say in the organisation, neither, apparently, do the actual contributing member states. It can be deployed without their permission.

The people outnumbered the cops. If they did not come out they were cowards and do not deserve a say so dont you think?

No the numbers of people against sepreation were out even before the election was to take place. So what danger was there at being beaten weeks before the event?

That wouldn't be a loss of sovereignty - on the contrary - to get rid of NATO and replace it with an 'EU army' of some sort ... The current Eurocorp is an empty shell.

Back to Spain : they have the highest number of policeman per inhabitants of the whole EU.

It's complicated. The vote was declared illegal. Non separatists would have no obligation to either participate in the vote, or respect the outcome. If this goes to fighting it will be separatists versus non separatists and outside Spanish.

The last referendum vote was 90% for secession? Are you contending that the people who didn't vote should veto those that had?

And now the people are cowards for not fighting the cops on the streets? Hello Brave New World! It's here to stay, innit?

That should tell you something, just think about it for a second? Also, which numbers? Source?
