The Elizabeth tower needs renovation, which is why the iconic Big Ben will go quiet for four years, to protect the hearing of the workers. For the first time since 1859, apparently.
Now I read this

here
And had to share, because I think it's funny.
These Brits are crazy! (No offence that's why we love you)

Lol, the bell will still chime for events such as new years eve and rememberance Sunday, just not every day.
Made me chuckle though

The bell went quiet in 2007 and earlier and longer between 1983-1985 for repairs/maintenance too.

Funny, I will say that.

But it also shows a complete lack of reading comprehension. The hourly "bongs" (now that is funny!! There were several stories where they used, "bongs", I think I even read, "silent bongs" which made me LOL. "Uh, my bong is always silent... until I use it!!
Hi-tech silent bongs... don't let Tommy Chong know!) will stop but will still ring on New Years, etc. as noted earlier. Made me shake my head at this story as most "conspiracy theorists" actually look long and hard between the lines trying to sus out the "truth."

HuPo doesn't think very highly of CT types, huh?

The government are already looking into it and have said they will think again about the proposal.
Big Ben is a tourist attraction and integral to the London experience , it won't be silenced.

The UK never joined the EU, instead of adopting the Euro, they kept the Pound.

The UK joined the EU just rejected currency union. The UK recently voted on a slim margin to leave the EU.
It is certainly easier for the UK to leave the EU because it did not enter into currency union.

We were a member of the EU well before the Euro came to be.

But didn't adopt the Euro... how come? Don't answer that. The Uk is the only country that didn't give up its national currency for the Euro dollar. I also note the UK doesn't pay much to control the flow of refugees coming into southern Europe.

Why bother, the UK is safe pretty much, they are an Island.

Because it wasn't right for us , adopting the Euro means handing over control of tax and interest rates and as Ireland discovered they are set to the need of Germany and France.

I'm sorry but maybe I misunderstood you, you posted this...

The UK never joined the EU

I said the UK joined the EU but rejected currency union. The political and judicial issues are part of being members of the EU. That is what is being negotiated right now, the exit of UK from the EU.

Not 'right'? Only the countries that were to be enslaved to debt had the euro imposed upon them. It wasn't a choice.

It was one big happy union, by-by national sovereignty.

Not right is right.

I know, and I said theres your sign. Every other country had to adopt the euro. But not UK, hmmm, they special? better than? hmmm...

Now they have reaped the profit from all that debt and are 'leaving'... lol
They didn't adopt the coin and they don't want to help pay for the refugee crisis. We Brexit. Sorry about that.

I'm not talking about we the peoples either, but the gubment.

The other countries chose to join the Euro , it benefited their citizens as they have one single currency across borders.
Denmark also chose not to join the Euro so we are not "special"

Wow!

Given that Britain is the master of time, all world time being measured from Greenwich, does that mean that by stopping time for 4 years, nobody has to pay any interest on their debts?

Controlling a nations currency is what removes sovereign state status. Issuing a currency form another countries banks enslaves the citizens to that foreign bank. Not 'beneficial' , except to the bank.

I remember when Qaddafi was going to start introducing gold Dinars... look what happened to him. UK EU US (NATO), bombed his country to dust.
