How does a company that provides "free" online services get valued at X millions or billions of dollars on the stock exchange?

Mental gymnastics? Or secret government financial contracts, using profiling, facial and voice recognition to link every single user to other users, known or unknown?

Anyone...?

Very good point exactly why I never joined

I'm a liberal, and I totally get this. I have been on FB since it started, or right after. 2005, when it required a college email.

This election really made me realize how toxic it has become. 95% of my friends on there are liberal, and probably 75% of those are stereotypical Clintonites, and my wall before and after the election went INSANE with all the typical identity politics sh%t. I have been off for 2 months as a result. It has been amazing.

Unfortunately, I need to rejoin as I am a member of bunch of very good job posting groups with friends posting, and I'm beginning a serious job search.

Oh, many people already did that! I have an account, but it's barely used, and I might log in 2-4 times a year. No games, next to no posts, it's literally there as a contact for extended family that won't use other methods. Used to spend time there, and they kept changing it and changing it, to the point that I lost all interest. I don't miss it, at all!

"This sounds like a self entitles rant to me. "

Great. Put a name on it and take a picture! Wheeee!
All rants are self-entitled..that's why they're called rants... and there's a "forum just for 'em" ;-)

Let me rephrase then. You sound like a self entitled whiner that thinks everyone should accept whatever crap spews from you, with no repercussions.

My advice, grow up and understand that when you fail to follow the rules, you will be taken to task for your indiscretion. Whining to another group about being treated that way is simply immature.

Hold on a second. Why is posting a quote from Hitler, and one that appears to be critical of him, not "following the rules" or "crap?" Which rule are you referring to? And, people post all kinds of offensive things towards others on FB.

I'm not following your angle here.

And I don't even support probably where the op is coming from with Hitler, i.e. that he was a real socialist or libera.

Why is posting a Hitler quote, in an apparently critical post regarding him, grounds for being kicked out?

How is that quote critical of him? He actually seems to be in the right there. However we should never attribute anything good to the man. He was a genocidal blow hard

It's obvious that the op was trying, as a number of conservatives have, to paint Hitler as a liberal/socialist, when virtually all credible scholars have outlined how his actual government and policies were right wing. Fascism does not equal socialism. The op is doing what many conservatives have tried to do, first disown Hitler as right wing, and then make him as "yet another example of why socialism or leftism are evil." It's clear as day. Why don't you ask the op? I'm right.

Also, op, the quote is not from Hitler but from another Nazi.

I dont think its obvious. Particularly if you hate the idea of capitalism. To think it is obvious you would have to understand the nuances between those four different ideologies. Which you clearly do. I do however now understand your point, but i dont think the average FB user would. I know i didnt and i dont think im stupid just couldnt see the angle untill you pointed it out. Its just not obvious. Thanks tho bud.

I had to stop reading after your first sentence because I already knew this happened.

On December 1st, 2016, Facebook began blacklisting the press by ip addresses. So on December 1st, 2016, at 12:01 am, I signed off of facebook indefinitely.

My reason for leaving was clear. And you should do the same as a copy and paste of the following text:

Your censorship of the first ammendment right of this country is inexcusable.

I don't use Facebook, but if your life was made "less peaceful" by using a social media website... You're doing it wrong.

And are we supposed to have some inside knowledge of what you're going on about with an aryan kid selling cheap auto glass?

Reading the OP, I feel like you might just need to take a few do breaths and remember, getting banned from Facebook isn't a big deal, and shouldn't have much, if any effect on one's life. Move on... You'll survive.

I heard someone say this once and it rang so true to me:

"Facebook isn't about connecting with friends, it's about having an audience."

Most people who post a lot on Facebook are looking for validation and nothing more. I have a hunch that they aren't as happy with their lives as they put off so they post things for likes and shares in order to feel validated.

The problem with that is that they won't post anything they DON'T want people to know and will only post things they DO want people to know, in effect creating a false persona online, making their life seem better than it actually is. It also becomes an echo chamber where you can easily delete or block anyone that has a different opinion which leads to a positive feedback loop that feeds ones ego no matter how wrong they actually are.

I do have Facebook but I rarely use it for those exact reasons.

Well said but but most social media is a construct of a person so to speak anyway, just that main one more than most. Emotional health wise it causes depression for people and children even exposed to it with EDs, self esteem issues, bullying, etc., not only that plastic surgery is booming for people who want more photogenic selfie angles.

FB is monitoring the masses and using the data, along with the studies that have been performed on users to the facial recognition grid, as needed paraded as the modern way of "Keeping up with the Jonses".

The effects of it seem worse than the benefits, unless one knows how to utilization it properly(only way to contact some friends I guess) but use it to where you can't be tracked-fake names, careful with image data and faces, don't give out private info that can lead to being robbed and more.

Yup I recall the convos about that a while back, even if you don't have one or even a very active public one, they can still think of you as suspect. It opened a door for a legal form of discrimination, considering you can know most everything about the willing person that you may or may not want without interviewing them face to face, in a multitude of ways.

I watched the new reality TV program called "Hunted" last night and one couple that I thought had a good chance of winning got caught through Facebook. The husband and wife team was doing really well, but because the wife had reconnected with a friend a number of years before on Facebook, and that friend commented that she had no info about the hunted couple, that alone raised a red flag for the investigation team.

They found the friend's home where they were hiding out, and when she volunteered to talk at her front gate, she acted suspicious. Then the couple had a panic attack and made some more stupid mistakes, but it was a very small and insignificant lead on Facebook that got them caught.

Because of social media and other sources, if you decide to drop out or go on the run, you must never contact or stay with anyone you ever knew in your entire lifetime. Never do anything like you did in your normal life and you might have a chance to avoid detection.

"I am putting forth the idea that Facebook has cast a spell on society and it's about to get worse. "

The internet itself has put a spell on society. As has every other social media site that is used to network with people, for whatever benefit they need or use it for...not just Facebook. Mass exodus is doubtful. If you feel validated/ vindicated in leaving over a controversial meme then that is your business. We are not all ignorant to the business dealings and privacy trade offs surrounding the use of Facebook. Some of us..just don't care. Facial recognition? My photo can be taken from any number of sources when I'm out in public as there are cameras everywhere. At least if it's on Facebook I'm looking good and smiling versus me with a cold, bad hair day, in my pj pants taking a 20 from the bank machine to buy cold medicine at the pharmacy. There are multiple sources to gain info about anyone if you wanted it bad enough. As for posting things that deliberately incite a hateful response...

Dude that show is great. And really creepy, it really opens one's eyes to just some of the things the authorities have at their disposal in this day and age. Basically it is impossible, if they want you, theyll get you.

Well then it is a good thing his first amendment rights weren't harmed then isn't it?

remind me again, after OP was banned from FB, which federal prison did he go to for his free speech?
