Latest report is people choking on smoke, hanging out of windows trying to get air.

Another "Tornado Team" is due in to arrive in an hour or so. Almost 300 officers will be on-site at that point.

Can any of you Brits explain what a Tornado Team is? And why they're having to travel from all over rather than having had officers on-site to begin with?

Prisons are the ultimate responsibility of HM Prison Service (The Crown) not police.
Their snatch teams are regionally based hence the delay.
its all about jurisdiction politics.

Inmates are said to be hanging out of windows calling for help as they struggle to get fresh air, as a fire rages at Winson Green Prison. Hundreds of prisoners have been rioting since 9am at the G4S-run jail, with reports of people seriously injured inside. “My brother is screaming for help,” said one woman. “The smoke is that thick on the landing that he can’t breathe.”

This what happens when government contracts go to G4S. The only way they can make a profit is by submitting a tender and then cutting the services they provide. They are a bunch of cowboys that only get government contracts because of the various politicians who hold shares and sit on their board of directors. They are a disgrace and are part of the reason everyone is so fed up with self serving politicians and their corrupt dealings.

They're like SWAT teams with a cooler name.

These guys are specifically trained to seize control from rioters in built-up settings. They'll have been doing drills on prison riots for years and have all the floor plans.

Every UK police force has limited members of the task force who are on-call when emergencies like this arise. It's why they take a while to be coordinated.

I dread to think what the news is going to be tomorrow. Some sources suggest other prisons will follow the lead.
