Birmingham prison riot... hundreds inmates take over 4 wings

Hundreds of prisoners have taken over four wings at Birmingham prison in what has been described as the worst disorder of its kind since the 1990 Strangeways riot.

Two wings were sealed off after a disturbance broke out at about 9am, but G4S, which runs the prison, said it has now spread to another two wings. It has called in a specialist "Tornado" team plus dog units to contain the disorder.

Prisoners are posting their own pics and have got hold of riot helmets and batons.
Apparently turning fire hoses on riot teams.

G4S the private company has handed back control/responsibility to Her Majesty's Prison Service according to some reports.

A major fire has now broken out at the HMP Birmingham.

They've been burning the paperwork all day. This sounds like a more serious fire.

People have been beaten and tortured in there all day, it seems.

So prison was privatised, that usually leads to major economic savings, must wonder if that a wrong place for savings. According to twitter 6 prison vans has been sent there.

Prisoners also have been able to get a hold of entire sets of keys, it seems.

And it appears that an "inner gate" has been breached and they're trying to keep the prisoners from breaching another gate...

Yeah it's been bubbling in the news for a year or two. Prisoner assaults and fights have increased by a lot and prison staff are being assaulted in greater numbers.

Factor in the (imo) ridiculous levels of drugs and legal highs and it's a powder keg. A woman I know had her son go down for robbery and domestic battery. He went in with a heroin habit and was recently released with habit intact and addiction to spice and whatever else. He's in a halfway house on their drugs rehab programme. Mind blown every time I hear stories like it.

Coincidentally I watched a doco on the Strangeways riots a couple of months ago and the parallels are there. Difference is there was a brutal officer regime and bad conditions at Strangeways and this one looks like inmates exploiting a weakness and having a party.

Who'd be an average unarmed prison officer right now?!

So the riot had started at 9 am according podcast. This is not good it takes so long, you can only imagine what happens when food runs out etc.

It's not great pay for the risks, is it?

Ironically, prisoners prefer a well-run prison too. Most want to feel safe inside. I bet most of those involved are going along with it because the consequences of not doing would be...what's the best word? Unpleasant?

My guess is the counter attack will happen soon and they'll retake the prison this evening.
The prisoners taking selfies are gonna be done over for sure.

Really?

They will likely get a early parole knowing our prison system......well if they are pedophiles, murderers and rapists they will....

“The people who are in the most danger are the ones who owe big debts because of drugs. If people are spotting others who owe them a lot of money they are being dealt with.

“Some people are staying in big groups for protection and others are following the group. Some are just staying in their cells and keeping their heads down.

“One has had his head bust up, one has been stabbed and others have been beat up and rushed. There are riot officers on the other side of the door with dogs, but there is no help from them. It’s not safe.

“This wing has been destroyed. It’s full of water and I’m just collecting up my stuff, packing up my pictures and canteen because I think we will be moved.

Yep lots of riot police have arrived now, it's starting I reckon.

Hopefully they find a way onto the nonce wing and kill them all.
