Really great pics!

Do you have a link to the original Wikileaks email dump for provenance?

That 1800's era ship was very cool...

That's what I was thinking too. For sure that last photo with the Cruise ship wasn't that old. That was a modern ship.

I think the old sail boat was the only thing old about these photos and the photos were taken in much more modern times.

Sorry it's a load of crap.
I would say that sailing in the Antarctic in a tall ship would suck.

I am thinking that the cruise ship is a French one that does unchartered cruises...could be wrong though.
I'll look it up tomorrow.

I crewed on an antique 77 ' racing Schooner in Hawaii years ago. She was built for Teddy Roosevelts nephew in about 1930. '
The ship in the Antarctic pics is far older. and larger then the one I crewed on.

It begs the question... What the heck is it doing there?

No, we go back in time to take those pictures
Here is a picture that demonstrates how the US won against the British. The old Frigate is the USS Constitution which was commisioned in 1797. George Washington named her.
What this picture shows is that we went back in time to assist ourselves in the war against the English. Thats really why they lost, everything else was made up

You are right!

HISTORY

The vessel was built in 1911 under the name of “Senator Brockes” at the Stulcken shipyard in Hamburg, at the request of the city of Hamburg. The ship was put into service as Elbe 3 lightship on the river Elbe, and later worked as a stand-by vessel. In 1986 the ship was brought to the Netherlands. Over a period of 8 years, she was completely rebuilt and rigged as a three-masted bark.Europa3

The rebuilding and conversion to a sailing vessel was carried out under the supervision of the Dutch Shipping Inspection, Bureau Veritas and Register Holland. She sails with worldwide certificates from each of these authorities and she complies with the highest requirements for sailing ships.

i'm thinking that both ships are reseach vessels that tours on have become quite popular.
i think the one that everybody is talking about is this one

the golden lion, look at the masts. by the way she was built in 1937.

The 70m research vessel Golden Lion has just received a complete refit at the Balk Shipyard in the Netherlands. Golden Lion a three-masted topsail schooner has the work carried out to EU Directive 98/18 on safety rules and standards for passenger ships.

Golden Lion (Gulden Leeuw) has been brought up to the very latest standards in every aspect of her aesthetics, equipment and technologies. She will serve not only as a sail training vessel but also a day sailer for up to 200 guests. All the original detailing that makes the boat so special has been carefully removed and restored by the Balk craftsmen, who have once again showed their ability to combine the past, present and future.

both above from,
70m research vessel Golden Lion Yacht completes refit at the Balk Shipyard.

there is a comment on the videos youtube page that says the ship is the Bark Europa which looks like the one you posted. the ships are not the same.
