I like the fact that the greeting "hello" was not the standard greeting in English until the popularisation of the telephone.

If I remember correctly they needed a standard way of answering as people felt uncomfortable with the new fangled contraption and initially wanted Ahoyhoy but it never caught on and the "Hello Girls" made it the norm.

I love how Mr Burns was so old he still used "ahoyhoy" my brother and I still use that greeting on the telephone to each other to this day.
