This is interesting . Apparently they are wanting to pay people in the system money, to not be repeat offenders.

Wouldn't just be easier and better to do away with anti drug laws in order to reduce crime (Especially violent crimes) if its legalized.

The D.C. Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a bill that includes a proposal to pay residents a stipend not to commit crimes. It's based on a program in Richmond, California, that advocates say has contributed to deep reductions in crime there.

Under the bill, city officials would identify up to 200 people a year who are considered at risk of either committing or becoming victims of violent crime.

The bill doesn't specify the value of the stipends, but participants in the California program receive up to $9,000 per year.

I was thinking the same thing but it looks worse. First you have to get in the system then you can qualify for the lotto;

So if you are homeless and make less than 9K ,go commit a crime and hopefully you get a 9K a year to not do it again. WTF?

I don't see this being very effective. What I see it doing is making people more careful to not be caught.

Thats 200 people x $9,000 per person, comes to $1.8 million.

Hmmm.

Ok, I accept.

Their names must be published so that I may rob them.

That's like paying your kid to clean his room. There are some things you just do, simply because you want the freedom to do other things or because it's the right thing to do.

If your teen doesn't clean his room simply because it is a contribution to the household and his role in it, then he can stay at home a few weekends until he "sees the light". If someone doesn't want to follow the laws because that is their contribution to the country and their role in it, then they can sit in the state pen/county jail until they see the light.

Paying people for ridiculousness is... Well... Ridiculous.

How about after three felonies you get the noose?
I bet that would cut down on multiple offenders and a cremation is loads cheaper than $9k.

Apparently not.

And it strikes me with all this anti bullying campaigning that has been going on the last few years...

Some folks would forfeit their lunch money daily in their school attending years to keep the bully from being an a-hole, this is the same thing only in adult size.

Let's give these folks our hard earned tax money in hopes that they won't be an a-hole.

Sounds legit.

I don't think all of the participants would get $9000.

funding the program, which would cost $4.9 million over four years, including $460,000 a year in stipend payments
That averages $2300 each. Still not bad money to not commit crime.

But that estimated cost is just under $1.3 million per year. So it takes $765,000 of overhead per year to give away $460,000.

I found this interesting:

Under the bill, city officials would identify up to 200 people a year who are considered at risk of either committing or becoming victims of violent crime.
Emphasis mine.

So, they're paying people to not commit crimes, as well as to not become victims of crime. I don't get it.

So they're applying positive reinforcement to reduce crime? Theoretically it could work but realistically this is not a sustainable long-term solution. I'm assuming this is just a trial and if it's successful they plan on expanding this program to include more candidates, so where exactly is the money coming from to fund this?
Oh right us the taxpayers who are also robbed, raped and murdered by these same criminals that this bill is wanting us to help fund their lives of crime.

No thanks.

How long before the government is paying certain people not to vote?
Paying people not to watch porn?
Paying people not to drive their SUV?
Paying people not to eat certain foods?

Where will it all end?

In a communist dystopia where everybody's paid by the government to watch American Idol all day.

And to help the police corroborate false stories about their neighbors.

I mean, pay people to not commit crimes? I'd say a good number of them would take that 9k a year and use it as start up capital for their next criminal empire.

Think about it, now they got err.. GET a 9k starter fund to bribe the police.
