How would I go about making my avatar dead centre? It's annoying that the avatars are placed more to the right than the left, with more space to the left of the avatar than to the right.

If my math is correct. (It isn't always)

width = 187 pixels
avatar starts at horizontal pixel 10
to be centered, need 10 pixels on eithe side of avatar
187-20 = 167

here is a 167-wide Avy...

Oh, thank you. =) For some reason I didn't get a notification.

It seems like it lost a lot of quality though.

It is because I reduced the file size to be within the 75 kb requirements for avatars

I think you should go with a background though anyway instead of an avatar.

Just say the word here and talented artists will oblige. And if they don't... I will.

But the one I use now is 297kb... ?! I don't get it.

If you open the image specifically in a new tab it's huge.. or, pretty big at least.

That's so weird.

The site reduces the image automagically so it displays in a 170X240 avatar space.

Here are the current rules for avies and backgrounds.

Ahhh.. wouldn't it be possible to get squeeze more quality out of a 75kb image though? Maybe by saving it as some other file type.

Strangely now when I look at that image you made it's 96kb("on disk").

I tried changing it to a jpeg and now it's 28kb.. So it should be possible to make one with maximum quality as a jpeg, could you do it? I'm terrible at this stuff.

or you could do something quick and simple like this and use it as a background with a clear avy gif

Seems like you're right..

I did lose quality:

That's typical.. is there no way to solve this problem. It seems strange that it wouldn't be possible to use an avatar that small and still have full quality.

a reply to: Zarniwoop

Thanks for all the effort, I really do appreciate it. At this point I really don't know what to do.. I don't want to lose out on all my flashy stars either.. And I think I'm a little bit too obsessive compulsive to let that imbalance slide.

Hmm.. this is interesting. Apparently once I have uploaded a file(the quality loss comparison above in this case) it will still be displayed in the thread even after having been deleted(I just had to try as an experiment).
