Pope Francis has claimed that he hasn't watched TV since 1990 after making a promise to the Virgin Mary.
The Pope said that he didn't even watch the matches of his football team San Lorenzo de Almagro back in Buenos Aires, but got a Swiss Guard to update him regularly on match results and league table positions.
In an interview with an Argentinian newspaper he said there was no particular reason for his vow- he simply decided: 'It's not for me.'

Is that the man of change? How could we possibly expect him to make any difference in the world, if he doesn't read the feedback from those who WATCH HIM ON TV and Internet, and read HIS TWITTERS? Is it serious? Therefore he could've claimed he read zero pages on Alien Disclosure, new tech, and the like, let alone political analyses. The worst is, by saying so, he practically pretends to be above the stupid internet users who spend time and energy to make things different. Including in this forum.

is this the man the cardinals elected in 2013 to make the difference, expected by some as Peter the Second? Weren't they somehow wrong? After 2+ years in expectations, the Catholic church as the world's still largest organization, should think of where it goes from now on. Is it adequate to a fast changing world that demands fast reactions of the old enough old guards.

I can say more. I prefer to stop here.

Let the advisers of the pope, whoever they might be, tell him to start browsing internet, at least on the Religious feedback. Because the people's patience have some limits. We are not in 1998 to expect the 2000 new dawn. We are already 15 years in 21st century and not so much was done, also by the Catholic church! With or without internet.

Good for him for not watching TV! It's mostly garbage.

Spiritual leaders should be leading the culture, not following along. He & his kind are (should be) inspired by the Bible. He doesn't need to know who won Dancing with the Stars.

I find internet more useful but could walk away if needed.

He has advisers that keep him up to date on everything he needs to know. He may not read about it himself, but he knows what's going on.

They were talking about this on Radio 2 yesterday, I had to switch it off. They said it was 'sad' and 'depressing' he and others don't watch TV. They asked how on Earth he kept up to date and educated....

Erm.. how about books?

Like, seriously? This is a prerequisite for someone to know what's happening in the world today? How awful. I'd say he'd be MORE suited because he doesn't deal with the constant barrage of cognitive dissonance the average person does.

Quite sure he is not totally disconnect of World events and has a lot documents to read every day. What he lacks is actually seeing things in perspective and how certain issues in the World right now has impact in peoples lives.
He is a religious leader which could be easily manipulated due this as he pretty much is dependent what comes to this table ( issues which are preread and selected ), not seeking things out by himself and making own opinion what is going on.

Sad really

Two years plus of failed expectations! Do the world and the catholic church have another 2 years to wait for a miracle? The jesuit bought time to prevent the change!

Cardinal Oulett should have never given him his own votes of cardinals voters! Bergoglio had less!

Many of us expected that man Francis to lead the world in the change, by showing personal courage and advanced knowledge and ideas! He didn't even bother to read internet, In principle, because of a word said to the Virgin Mary!!! What more is needed then? A jesuit especially in his position wouldn't slip a word in interview, without a purpose. It is not a blogger. it is to say to the world: I don't really care of what you think of me, I go my way, because I am the pope". Bad choice! Because even the Third world now has TVs and internet. I don't know what the purpose of the Jesuit is by saying that, when he is one of the most televised men on the planet. It is just absurd. He could spare that latest disillusion of his supporters. Or perhaps he wanted that.

Marc Ouellet of Canada almost became the Roman Catholic Church’s first pontiff from the New World before he asked his backers to switch their support to the eventual winner, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, according to several media reports.news.nationalpost.com...

Since when has the Catholic church been known for change? They still wear clothing styled in the 14th century. (Swiss guard uniforms)

Which expectations have failed exactly? Are you sure this isn't the result of you getting your hopes up for things that were never going to happen? Even then, two years isn't exactly a long time to accomplish much. Especially in an organization as old and as steeped in tradition as the RCC. Why wouldn't we have 2 more years to wait anyways?

Why doesn't he go back in the Argentinian province to preach there where he belongs to?

Really don't see what the big deal is. Who cares if the man shuns technology? Have you ever heard of a newspaper?

you may continue defending it, and surely the Jesuit Pope have a special purpose to say it. I just can't accept it as normal today. 2 years mean too much in 21st century when the world is on the brink. We could have WW3 in Ukraine last year, just one of the many examples. Perhaps he would have been informed by his secretary who reads internet, or by the radio waves of a 100 year old radio receiver. It is just absurd! The worse is, Bergoglio-Francis makes it intentionally.

I take a pause now. Should I say, from today oh dear Virgin Mary, I will never read and write online, because it might be a sin to say what I think to the world internet users, especially those in this blessed forum?

The way the pope informs himself: newspaper in the morning (with coffee may be) and, why not, a radio receiver? After all, we live in the time after Edison!

I really don't care what he does to be honest. The Catholic Church doesn't run the world so the pope staying up to date in international affairs is irrelevant. I mean if he DID watch television and got on the internet, what more would he do besides be a bit better informed? Release press statements from Twitter on what the RCC's stance on certain matters are? Wow that's helpful...

Good for him, the TV and the internet is full of stupid and most people don't have the critical sense to identify it.

A good Christian is out in the world helping and talking to people.

Not feverishly refreshing ATS for the latest doom porn/prophetic dream.

Shame on you for suggesting he should spend more time reading garbage on the net.

the Jesuit Pope

Do you actually dislike the guy that you call him the Jesuit Pope instead of just the Pope, like Jesuits are bad Christians or something?

Oups, now we are not WW2, but WW3, almost. I believe the pope will be properly informed anyway!

He wants to be of use in the world. Any consumption of media is a distraction from living a useful life. The less one is exposed to 'popular' culture, the better. A person is then more able to see the world, as it is, not as other's would have it seen and respond in a geniune fashion.

I applaud the man for setting an example, I could do well to follow more diligently.

No I don't. He simply doesn't follow his own trumped words of changes. He doesn't have infinite time, neither do we.

BTW, how he posts twitts if he doesn't go to internet? And if his secretary could post his words on the second biggest twitter, perhaps his secretary could also read what the people think of him, including on twitter. Perhaps they do so.

There is a bunch of info that could be reached today only by internet. If the pope doesn't care of it, that means he has a better source, secret as always for a jesuit.

Why I say Jesuit pope? Because it is the truth - the first jesuit pope in history. Nothing personal. Just awaited much more of him after 2 years papacy. Let not forget that night when he was elected, amid prophecies of Peter the Roman. It could be anyone of the 120, including people younger, from bigger catholic countries. The Jesuit Bergoglio was a SURPRISE after he failed to score majority in 2005 election. He himself said it was a surprise for him and he didn't want it. What happened to card. Sherer, asked journalists. The answer given was neither Sherer nor his Italian counterpart won the majority. And Bergoglio won it, thanks to Oulett giving his votes. I don't know how that procedure works, if one cardinal can give his votes as if they are bargain chips. Aren't the senior cardinals expected to vote by conscience in first place? OK the election is a done thing, and I am not a cardinal to decide it. But...we already had 2+ years of empty promises!

Perhaps it is a time for him and his cardinals to finally make something new. Or...the people will be disillusioned, step by step as he is doing now, or at once if a bigger event than that happens surprisingly. At least the prophecies say so.

I could go on and on, but it is useless. At this point Francis is irrelevant. Or he wants to look a such, outdated old man. Perhaps it is just a trick to leave behind the crowd of unhappy catholics and to rush towards what only he knows to follow.

Only, it is not very much fair for the people to whom he sells Sunday homilies of personal sinfulness. They are televised for the rest of the world, and the biggest holidays as Pentecost last Sunday could probably have hundreds of millions of TV /Internet watchers. Did he say he didn't watch Vatican broadcasts either? Isn't it just an illusion if he is the most often televised person surpassing Putin and Obama. Because Putin and Obama don't usually do rallies as the pope does. (Putin appeared at the Red Square parade and twice TV conferences a year, plus one New Year address).

Francis should stop playing games with the people. He could preach what he preaches as archbishop of Buenos Aires, he didn't have to become pope for doing that. Being pope is more than being parish priest, and declaring proudly to the world that you don't watch TV and internet, because of a promise to Virgin Mary. Perhaps he is a seer, too? That's why the problems with other seers catholics?

The world expects much of Francis, and may be the common catholic will forgive the many trespasses already seen in Catholic N1. far not only the TV. Because Francis criticized both the fervent faithful and those with secular views. The world and the church, expects him something more than that. If not, we will have another mandate of Benedict and wonder what it was all about after the trumped Second Pentecost by St. John Paul 2 around year 2000. We will wonder, while the new generation will forget to mention it. The catholic church will have referendum results as that of the catholic Ireland. After 1 generation, there won't be a need of one unifying figure called pope. Perhaps sooner than expected.

Unless the red hats make a difference. Including the one whom they have chosen to lead that difference.

Do I hate anything catholic or the pope in principle? No I don't.

I totally get it.

TeeVee SUCKS! Easily the past decade or two have been the slow death of TV in my eyes.

For entertainment, the internet is slightly better...but overall there is a huge swath of total crap spewing from production companies these days. Usually in the form of reimagined plagiarism. I have yet to see many original shows. I guess they don't call it programming for nothing.

For info and news however, I will only "trust" the internet. MSM broadcast news is beyond drivel and is usually quite slow on reporting what is already brought to everyone's attention from the internet. I don't know how many times I have found out news, hours if not a day before the MSM from ATS or sites like reddit.

All in all though, who the hell cares what an old dude in the Catholic church thinks? What does it matter if he watches TV or goes on the internet?

That said, maybe he is even on a sight like ATS...spewing his thoughts and rhetoric under an alias.

The Vatican TV broadcasts the pope's Angelus every Sunday. Each month there is a major feast that is also broadcast live. The feeds are taken up by US and other Catholic networks to reach to millions. Everything is available on internet (the way I watch it). RAI (Italy) usually retranslates every major feast from St Peter's square. On top of that, every visit of the pope abroad is broadcast/streamed online by many more TVs. Those are several days in a row when the faithful catholics around the world could watch morning and afternoon the pope from masses on the other side of the globe - as it was the last time in the Philippines. Moreover, there are periods in the year, such as Christmas and Easter, when you have several days of feasts. Practically the pope is on the air all the year round.

How could he say he didn't watch TV? Well, technically he didn't. People watch him.

His internet twitter is second only to that of Obama, with 15-16 mln followers combined of the languages. Obama has over 40 mln. How could he possibly say he doesn't go to internet then? OK technically he doesn't, he says the words and they are typed by someone else.

I occasionally think of how Palpatine rose to power. He was a good man, too.
Doesn't mean Francis is Palpatine, or Benedict was, as depicted by cartoonists. But the system of the Roman church allows one man to rule over, to be the TV star of mega religious productions, to eclipse everyone else including top cardinals. Perfect scheme in the era of electronic communication to bring one man to power who shouldn't be in there. I don't say it is Francis. I say it is a constant temptation for everyone in his position, the glamour of the Televised ceremonies to change his character as well.

I think the question is exhausted. Until the next odd words of Francis. He could use all of that better, to bring a real change. He chose not to do so, until this moment, and instead to fill in the TV space, the information space with his own ...style. Because today's TV is internet, today's newspapers are internet, today's internet is TV. And Francis being the man N1 in the world as mega production actor. Only he plays his real self. Perhaps no big Hollywood actor has more hours filmed than the Roman pope, whoever he is.
