I dont think Hilter is controversial, he is notorious. Same goes for Stalin.

Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, Attila and Xerxes are controversial.

Depending on what side of the sword you are on, they were uniters or conquerers.

For that matter, Cortez and Columbus would qualify as controversial.

Science has put up a few as well. Galileo, Copernicus, Bruno, Newton, DARWIN.

1. Adolf Hitler

2. Napolon Bonaparte

3. Jesus of Nazareth

All three men created their own "personality cult" which through the passage of time has changed and "evolved". Today, for all three men, we can find groups both pro and anti in their interpretations of the ideologies these three great men created.

I'd add Alexander the Great. Some people to this day still choke on his name, and its been over two thousand years.

Wow, no one added Marx? Socialism and Communism still exist, but aren't expanding. But marxian influences on the study of history, politics, and philosophy and economy are still going strong. Also, one could argue that the problems in teh middle east now are in large part influenced by marx. Radical Islamist propagana and Baathist propaganda tend to use marxist thinking, with muslims playing the role of the proletariat and the west that of the capitalists. People will probably be talking about marx for a damn long time.

I'd have to exclude Jesus, simply because his existence is even still hotly debated...
