I don't usually Rant,so apologies if its not worthy, but I really hate the all too common phrase:

Made From Scratch

This supposedley mythical substance of scratch, could be misinterperated by an hostile alien force seeking galactic domination.
Earthlings it seems, can make anything "from scratch."

Food,houses,vehicles,anything-its all made from scratch apparently.
The wonder material, found nowhere else in the universe.

This awful phrase, when blurted out into the universe as we do via radio waves, could put us Earthlings in grave danger, when those who seek the perfect source of scratch come looking for it here,on planet earth.

MMmmwWwwAaarrrgh..Sorry if I have alerted the alien scratch hunters.

We should ban the use of the phrase "Made from Scratch."
Just to be safe.

Hey not to be rude and interrupt the rant and all.

I'm pretty sure the phrase came from an earlier concept which was used way back to refer to "hard work".

The phrase was then counter utilized by the industries at the time to mean "money", ie) hey, how much scratch did ya make? etc.

Since most folks use it to mean made at home or from raw ingredients....

I understand the irk from the phrase though...

Cheers

Me ole Nan always used to say made from the scratchings, ie whatever meagre food stuffs they could muster up during the war days. So I'm guessing that's where the saying comes from? As a kid I'd proudly leave the toilet afterwards and tell her 'made from the scratchings too'. She was never impressed.

Edit;
Always respect me ole Nan. Linkypoo's

Definition of scratch cooking; preparing food using basic ingredients rather than buying meals that have already been prepared

edit on 30-3-2015 by Qumulys because: Ole nan is always right, so added a linkypoo

Its an incredible non existent substance.

I actually can't work out if this thread is pure stupidity or sarcasm. I don't think you're stupid so I'll go with the latter.

I saw very little sarcasm...but then I looked for none...

Just a personal irk, we all got them.

The freedom to rant should be universal!

Cheers!

Won't those Aliens get a surprise when the precious scratch they come for has undergone metamorphosis and turns into 'Crap'

I've made loads of stuff from 'Scratch' but when people see the finished product they invariably say..

'Thats Crap!'

Thanks,I think-its probably a mixture of both.
Truth is,I have just had enough of the phrase, and yesterday I heard it about 10 times via TV,people in shops,in the street and at home.

I just had to let it out.

Anyhow,I'm off to make my dinner now-from scra....aarggh Noooo not that.
From noodles,vegatables and spices.

Interesting. I have never heard that term used for anything but cooking.

I guess I don't get out enough.

So yeah, they will be sorely disappointed, poor aliens.

I think the original thought is "the starting line for a race, scratched into the ground".
Hence "from the beginning".

I suppose it's one of those sayings or phrases that if you hear enough drives you crazy, like 'at the end of the day'.

It becomes so common for people to use sometimes people don't even know they're saying it.

I suppose at the end of the day, you have to decide if you want to use the same common sayings or phrases, or buck the trend.

Please don't say that "at the end of the da..."
It is in the same league as "Scratch" to me.
An abhorrent vocal meme over used by us two legs.

And don't mention the "A" word used by all news corps all over the planet .

You Absolutley know the word not to be mentioned.

But that word deserves a seperate rant.
