Wait a second.

How do they run out of condoms when those are made from petroleum products?

Venezuela pumps their own oil. They should drill a little deeper. Maybe then they will have a gusher.

Isn't Venezuela a predominantly Catholic country?

Isn't it against the Catholic Church's principles to use birth control? I know they are also used to protect against STI's, but the Catholic Church would prefer you went bare back.

Oil accounts for about 90% of Venezuelan exports.

2014 Venezuelan protests

This is some background to it, stupid people will blame Chavez I suppose but thats to be expected.

Like all dictatorships and broken "democracies" / crack pot regimes, the one thing they have is a good PR department to say how great things are. People actually believed the PR in that Venezuela was some uncorrupted, well run paradise!

Most people with half a brain recognised Venezuela as broken and it's ex leader, Hugo Chávez a prime manipulator and profoundly anti-democratic. His legacy is a country that went to the dogs in his time and has become increasingly broken.

Regards

It has two meanings that I know of, maybe I have led too much of a sheltered life. Is it offensive? If so, I will remove it.

I read an article last week about 'Venezuela' and how the shops are running out of all kinds things. People were lining the streets, waiting for such stuff like 'Toilet Roll'... basic needs!!

Well, can't use your hand!

But seriously the situation looks dire.

I also don't think Chavez is all the problems that Venezuela has become. Sure he had a few too many pet projects and took on too many powers that be but he was up against the Great Evil Empire...and when they don't like you everything gets much more difficult.

Or it could be that when you become known to merchants everywhere as a place that is prone to seizing assets and inventory on a whim because it suits your needs, no one wants to risk doing business with you anymore so it gets harder to get any goods shipped into the country. And then the Saudis, whose oil cartel you belong to, decide to sell you out depress the price of oil because they want to break the competitive will of other new competition that doesn't belong to their cartel ... well, you run out of the money you were using to try to grease the skids.
