I thought it was showing 120.14. This is where my ignorance shows, but do a google on ham radio band widths and know the legal differences between am, fm, cb, family radio and other frequencies is you are curious.

FM bands generally go higher than 108 but are not available on standard radios.

12015 kHz is Voice is Korea out of Kujang with 200kW of output. So he's tuning in bone stock VOK, no repeater needed.

Wow.. Then they must have a powerful radio tower!

I used to work western Europe from Georgia with 100W, 200KW is a lot of output.

Back when I had time for it it was a lot of fun. Used to do MARS a lot.

Anyone can get an amateur license, they dropped the CW requirement some time ago although I really liked working CW. You get a lot farther for the power.

I believe the acronym stands for Military Affiliate (or is it Auxiliary?) Radio System. I've seen people chatting about it on that shortwave site I linked last page. I'm not entirely sure what it is beyond that.

Sorry. Military Auxiliary Radio System. Way back when in the olden days of the late 70s, you didn't have all these new-fangled satellite and cell phones and free long distance. Back then (and a LOT during the Vietnam war) military could call home from overseas through a MARS operator. All you needed was access to an HF rig in the field (most any unit has that) and you could get a MARS operator to phone patch you to your loved ones. You could also send telegrams back and forth through MARS (a MARSgram) for free. Prior to the Internet, that was a big deal.

MARS does a lot of disaster communications work, and legend has it that there have been times when units in the field have not been able to get normal contact but the Gods of Propagation netted them a MARS operator instead of their command and have been routed around the long way.

Things have changed a lot with sat comm, cell phones and the Internet, but MARS still operates.
