It does skip occasionally. It depends upon who the parents are and what kind of genes they have. Your dad just got "lucky".

Bipolar with psychotic features. The Depakote is for mania.

Bipolar actually manifests quite young.

Didn't you just say previously that:
BS bipolar presents itself when it presents itself or whatever you said.
So which is it?
Is it bs or does it TEND TO BE DIAGNOSED IN YOUNGER PEOPLE just as I said and you bsed me...this isn't a pissing match. Mental health is something that I don't jest about nor take lightly when someone seeks advice for themselves or a loved one.

I think Restricted just meant that it "could" manifest early on....not that it has to. And the "BS" comment was directed towards me and what the doctors said.....no pissing was happening....everything is cool....I appreciate all of the input

Yes it is very real. Look at it this way. Our brains and the chemicals in them controlling mood and everything else, are subject to pulls and tugs from gravity, magnetism, pharmacuticals, foods etc. And thats everyday.

The brain is a very soft and delicate organ with many susceptibilities due to any or all of the above, or a combination of them. Its not unreasonable to realize imbalances in one's brain are pretty normal day-to-day.

It happens. Try to get a qualified diagnosis by a medical or psychiatric professional, and good luck to you and your family.

It is very dangerous for him to take himself off his meds. I had a friend who did that for years. The last time he said he felt better and could think more clearly and was quite positive about life. I think it was a week later a family member called to tell me he commited suicide. Make sure that if your Dad needs meds that he continue to take them unless a doctor says otherwise and weans him off.

The good news is it has been about a year since his last episode and he has been staying on his medication. He is now maybe 60% of the man I grew up with but he is living a fairly normal life. His girlfriend came back and is helping him out as well.

So, here is the kicker….I am wondering if bi-polar is even a real thing or is it possible that he is/was demon possessed or is it something like HAARP that messed him up? My dad has always been very outgoing and smart but also has always had something…..like a glass cover over his personality. You can see into it but can’t quite get in touch with it. He was heavy into the Masons (31st degree) and pretty much my entire family thinks it is more "spiritual" than medical.
Good to hear he has stabilized. Has he ever had concussions in the past ? Head trauma or
emotional trauma ? Is he a veteran ? How stable were his parents ?
. . . just curious myself, I have dealt with some one who has 'bouts' and also who has a 'glass cover' ;
and
I just have to wonder, if it is either due to child hood trauma, genetics or just plain evil

thanks for the question,
it is interesting that you mention head trauma as he did hit his head on a dock while trying to get into a small fishing boat the day before the first episode over ten years ago. We asked the doctors about that back then and they said they didn't think it had anything to do with it so I really haven't thought of it again until you mentioned it.

As for childhood trauma.....not that I know of but he isn't one that would ever tell anyone if there was....so not much help there.

as for the just plain evil.....this is where the majority of my family is leaning though I am holding onto the genetics thing.

my mom, brothers and sister all feel it is spiritual and have voiced why they think this.....

did you feel anything "spiritual" with your experience or did you come to the "medical" conclusion?

What?! I am so sorry to hear that. I specifically asked the doctors if suicide or other actions that could hurt people besides him were possible and even asked if I should take all his guns......they told me not to worry about it.....that it wasn't like that.

my concern is that he gets a God complex when he is having an episode....I mean....he really thinks he is God......

Both. My friend. It could be either, both, or in combination with a lot of other factors.

Im not qualified for any medical advice other than as an EMT/ADLSupport. But I can give you an opinion. And once again...outside, inside, heredity, chemical, diet, pharmaceutical, allergic, OTC meds, food...or ANY COMBINATION of any of these....can cause a brain-chemical imbalance.

There, could lie the 1st step in realizing....some-thing...or THINGS...can be causing his symptoms. A complete medical, allergen, chemical and psychiatric evaluation would be a great place to start for anyone experiencing any of the symptoms and episodes he is experiencing.

It could be almost anything, or actually what he has been diagnosed with. But any-one of us...should have whatever testing done as ordered by medical doctors to get to the causes.

Again, good luck! MS
