How so?

She's saying that chimps and pigs mated to produce our ancestors.

I'm saying she must first prove a hominid primate couldn't have branched off to become the main ancestors of pigs and chimps.

Of course established science would probably refute both theories (since each of those species had their own evolution), but to me she must first prove that whatever she refers to as "chimps" and "pigs" existed before humans or some form of hominid.

I'm not saying she cannot, but I'd like to see it as a first step.

Wow, you're stupid. It was obviously a 3way between a Duck, Beaver, and Otter.

Ah, but you forget the Platypus has a venomous spurs on it's feet, so maybe the third participant was some kind of venomous reptile rather than an otter.

This is a revolutionary theory, I must present it to the Smithsonian.

I believe that this is why religions such as Islam and Judaism are not allowed to eat pork.

You're right. This is worse than I thought, they had some real swinger stuff going on back then. I bet if you look close enough you see some bunnies got in on the action at some point.

Great show, I used to watch that and one called the watermark on late TV as a kid, on a side note I was relieved when I found our tripi taka was a female actress what with having a juvenile crush on her and all.

Ahhhh Mon-key!!!!

Back on topic:

Eugene McCarthy is not really a world renowned scientist...
I knew I'd seen the name before and he's the guy who looks at all evolution as hybridisation (AKA Dinosaurs didnt die out - they just became Mammals).

This latest pig theory seems to be even more outlandish as we are supposed to believe that this cross species sex used to happen; but doesnt happen anymore.

What we do see is mutation, caused by Radiation and knowing that we have a shared common biological ancestor that has been blasted with radiation (from the Sun) for millions of year- I dont think it requires monkey/pig relations to explain the many adaptive similarities (as we all inhabit a shared environment).

Just as a question : can anyone think of any physical trait found in Humans that has not happened at least once before in the fossil record?

i was reading recently that we have pig dna in us which in its self is not surprising apart from the fact it is not found in other monkeys or apes. Maybe the man is right. Either way something is amiss...

And the occasional out-breeds, we use in public service.

(everybody sings)
Everywhere there's little piggies
living piggy lives.
You can see them out to dinner
with their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives,
to eat their bacon!

I agree with you sort of. I find the whole Chimps and Pigs gettin it on a tad hard to swallow but he is coming from a genetic point of view, hes saying we share genes and characteristics that are unlikely to be coincidence (this is fact) he then goes on to "Theorise" how this happened.
That said there was something on ATS not to long ago about dolphins acting up and packs of them going around raping non dolphins, even humans in some cases, Anything is possible

The thing is this guy hasnt just plucked this theory from his behind, he does actually have some (Ill admit slightly ambiguous) proofs and surely his academic background counts for something?
Outlandish as it sounds it could be worth looking into.

Im a believer in the theory that at some stage in our past our DNA was messed with by someone or something so this news wasnt surprising, just the theory of how happened doesnt sit well with me.

Couldnt resist looking into this further and it appears this theory has been known to the science community since June 2013 .....I would have expected some sort of "accepted science" joint rebuttal by now but it seems no scientist (with equal qualifications) has issued a statement denying possibility.

I wonder if Mr McCarthy has stumbled upon one of the many areas of science where the subject matter is so badly understood; he (using his specialised knowledge) has proposed a theory that couldnt be discredited without significant harm to the discreditors reputation due to lack of proof thereof.

This would be a good way to make money....maybe start a website and sell some books/t-shirts off the back of it??

I'd agree with most of your post, and I'd like to respond to your last point here.

Is there anything unique in humans that hasn't occurred before in the fossil record?

Possibly bipedal dinosaurs or birds notwithstanding (they fall far outside the theories), I'd say it's our natural state of walking on two legs.

I suppose if it didn't walk on two legs (without a tail or other forms of balance) then it wasn't a hominid, let alone our direct ancestor.

And this is a crux for me concerning the theory, because neither pigs nor chimps do much walking on two legs (pigs probably less than chimps).

Hence I don't see how two species that weren't, and aren't, very adapted to walking on two legs at all (never mind running) should combine to form a bipedal species.

If anything, walking on two legs was so complex to anything that came before, that it's simpler for me to argue that some hominids "de-evolved" into tree and foraging species that reverted to all fours.

I really believe neither that pigs and chimps made humans, or that some hominids evolved back into pigs and chimps.
However, to counter a ridiculous theory one can sometimes start by proposing equally ridiculous possibilities.

Would not surprise if we had pigs as ancestors especially when I see a black and white cruiser go by.

But on a serious note the Jews, Muslims and a few other don't eat pork because if it is not cooked well, which would have been common in days gone by, you can get trichinosis. Just could be they noticed those dining on pork on a regular basis didn't fair to well.
