This game is the one game I may just play forever, an open sandbox universe a bit like Elite.
I know many here on ATS know about this game and are looking forward to it so I think it deserves its own thread.

Some videos to get you in the mood.

We have another year until the main stuff is released..(Pity I can't go into cryosleep and wake up nearer) so we have plenty of time to sort out an ATS star citizen clan.

Having played wing commander 1 and 2 (and the expansions) WAY back in the day, I am extremely stoked for star citizen. I'm also keenly interested in it from a game development perspective. Having worked in game development in the past, I'm fascinated by the idea of a purely crowd funded AAA title, and I hope Roberts can deliver in that regard.

The only thing that disappoints me is that it's not REALLY wing commander since Roberts sold that IP. I want Kilrathi and I want to be able to play as one!

Yeah the Alien ships in Star Citizen scream Kilrathi. I just want it to be authentic you know?

As for Mark Hamill, I think that was WC3. Unfortunately I never played the third installment as my dad's 386 wouldn't run it LOL.

After that I sort of stopped following the series. I felt like the live action cutscenes sort of detracted from the game and went on to other titles. But Star Citizen looks like everything I'd hoped WC would become (and more). I just hope it doesn't turn into one of those tacky "play to win" games. Ideally i'd like to see pilot skill be the real determining factor in any conflict.

I don't think it will be pay to win seeing it is a buy the game play forever type.
Btw Iam thinking of an explorer type dude (I really want a galaxy named after me) what about you?

Definitely a career military fighter pilot. Possibly go merc depending on the perks, but I love the idea of being a pure dog fighter/bomber.

Edit to add:

One of the things I loved most about the WC series was bombing runs. Getting in close enough to kill capital ships with torpedo runs was always such a challenge. I loved how you could man the turrets and how you had to take your time to get a lock and take multiple runs at a capital ship to destroy it. Always super satisfying to nuke a capital ship or two.

Good thread. I bought into this just shortly after it went onto Kickstarter. With Roberts' vision for the game and credentials/resume, it was real easy to throw money at him.

In the mean time, there are other space sandbox games in the works as well. I've got my eye on this one also:

I think everyone can see the massive potential here. Really looking forward to this more than any other title atm. The thought of oculus rift with this is enough for nerdgasm, lol.

I feel bad for the let down you all are in for...

2 words...

CryEngine 3

and to make matters worse same .net framework as in Battlefield 3...

The same cheats that ruined BF3 will shortly be adapted for this...

Enjoy it before it is over ran by cheaters...

Who owns the Rights to CryEngine 3?

CryENGINE® 3 Independent Developers Platform
We want you to make games with CryENGINE® 3 that people will want to play. We hope that your work will lead to a product you can commercialise. We’ll offer a royalty-only license model for Independent Developers, where Crytek require only 20% of the developer’s revenues from the commercial launch of their game.

20% of Revenue, not Profits.

Battlefield 3 was done on a modified CryEngine 3 SDK. Frostbitten.

That is why it is so different from Bad Company 2 Engine.

If they don't release Unranked server files for this it will be complete trash...

Does have a lot of potential with modding. CryEngine SDK is the mod kit. SO if they release Unranked server files. Modding won't be an issue at all.

Will still be a blast of fun IF they release unranked server files even after the cheaters show up.

X: Rebirth comes out in 2 weeks. It has a custom inhouse built engine specifically because every other engine (including CryEngine) is built with a "floor". This really hampers Space Sims and was a thorn in the previous X games. The best part is don't choose one or the other, X is about to come out, SC is years away, get both.

What you mean with cheats? Moding? Because star citizen will support moding. Moding is not cheating... Some mods can be used for cheat, but the ones who use them are very few...

The persistent world MMO gameplay will not support much modding, and this is the aspect most people seem the most interested in. There will be modding for the other ways to play though, single player, or private servers, but then you can only play on a private server that has that particular mod which means the player population will be very low.

I heard about this game for a few years now. It looks cool and would be fun, but man would it eat up my time like crazy. And that is one thing which is getting shorter now a days, that and I find myself bored of videogames each and every passing year. Oh and not to mention I would have to drop a lot of cash on a new PC, graphic card, speakers, and everything, which I am not willing to do.

It pisses me off that I dont think it will be coming for the systems, I really dont have the time or patience for PCs now a days. I dig the concept and it seems you can do a lot of things in the game, in fact to much, I do have a life you know, kind of. Also one thing I think there making it for the new virtual gear mainly the Oculous Rift, I always thought the whole VR Oculous Rift was more or less a gimmick, and really anything that does not hook directly into your cerebral cortex probably wont impress me much. But it does sound like it can be fun, and especially if they make dogfights or or other aspects of the game in VR.

I only really started to get interested in the whole Oculous Rift thing after seeing some videos. The guy got pushed from behind while standing on concrete and he thought he was really falling, that right there says the technology does work. And I have not played a game that really scared me, at most they freaked me out in some instances and I was alone in my room with the lights out in the middle of the night to add to the effect. But with this headset and technology, it will definitely add and immerse you into it. I sort of did a 360 on the whole Oculous Rift went from meh! to really looking forward to see what you can create and do with this technology.

Was reading through a game-mag some weeks ago, and three games were confirmed for being VR. Star Citizen the other being Elite Dangerous and a game coming out some time for now on utilizing the new PS4 VR tech Sony is in the process of making EVE: Valkyrie. Which from what I read has its ups and downs, its downs being as its primarily focused on dogfighting in space and not an huge world complete with its own social and monetary ecology. The up side is that it wont eat up my time as its more of an arcade type game, and I would not need to buy a new heads up PC system and the Oculus Rift and the game, I would just have to buy the new headset/technology and the game when it comes out as there planing on copying and bring it out to the PS4. Project Morpheus or something they dubbed it.

Its something that would be more manageable for me personally. Even if they brought Star Citizen to console, it really would eat up to much time for me, would not even have time to do half the things you can do in that game.
