You can be exempted from the requirement to buy health insurance – and hence, from the penalty – if you meet one of the following requirements:

•You live illegally in the United States.

How does a US citizen become an illegal citizen?

It's goes beyond lawyers:

Q. Why is medical school so expensive?

A. Because doctors can earn a lot more than other careers during their lifetime.

Q. Why do doctors earn so much money?

A. Because medical school is so expensive.

Add on top of that privately run hospitals that are publicly traded, and HMO's that are also publicly traded and
the goal is maximum profit for minimum overhead.

When education in some fields is valued 10 times more than manual labor OR a combination of skill and labor, THEN YES some people are taking advantage of others big time. This is part of western thought, that manual labor is worthless and skill is everything.

Lawyers and doctors are way over-priced in relation to the services they provide.

Get treatment in any second or third world country for 1/3 to 1/10 what they charge in the states.

I'm not going to go all political here but my family has been waiting on the ACA to kick in for some time. Have a couple of under 26 family members who have benefitted from being able to be put back on their parents insurance which was a blessing the likes of which I can't even describe.

Personally, I have insurace so I'm set but believe me when I tell you I've spent the majority of my life without anything resembling a coupon, nevermind health insurance.

My sister signed up on day one and was thrilled with the price of insurance for her. She has a rare health condition that isn't fatal, as far as we know, but it needs to be kept in check and she didn't have many options and now she does and it's not coming at the cost of her health.

So I can't look a gift horse in the mouth. This law has literally been a godsend to my family.

(Please don't flame me for this and because I've recently joined this board. I didn't join here because of this thread. I saw it and decided to add the limited amount of personal experience with ACA to add to the knowledgebase.)

Without getting too specific, what was your sisters deductible?

I ask as the only semi affordable plans I saw had 5k+ deductibles and I'm not sure in itself is a huge savings.

BCBS is offering me a $2500 deductible for about $60 less a month than obamacare with a $5000 deductible. Somehow by the act of algorithm, the EMERGENCY ACA care that only covers three visits and catastrophes is MORE than the BCBS $2500 plan so to me, a relatively health person, this makes no sense.

Of course you're right...but the public won't accept that about their President. If they allowed that Obama or any previous President (while in office) was a sociopath, they'd have to accept what else that makes them capable of...while literally holding as much or more power to kill and make war than any other single human being on Earth.

America has aligned it's military in such a way that the President is, for that moment of decision on war, the most powerful man in the world......and we've elected one now with fundamental and quite apparent mental stability issues. That may be more than some can or want to deal with for reality.

I'd like to give this post a big DUH! because most of the people on Facebook are relying on memes and links blaze articles as their "facts". One person misunderstands something, tells ten friends who are even less informed, someone makes a meme about it and the rest is history.

The only thing this will do is force people to not be able to pay other bills, such as credit cards, etc. Folks will only be able to cover the essentials like groceries, mortgage, power bill, gas for the car to get to work, etc. This will torpedo the economy. Just a thought.

I think the real reason that prices are as high as they are is due to the fact that we allowed the private, for-profit, healthcare insurance industry to even participate in ObamaCare at all. This was not the original intent of democrats who were actually in favor of a "universal" single payer program, but because of the undue influence from the private healthcare insurance lobby, the Heritage Foundation and the GOP, here we are.

From a democratic viewpoint, I can tell you that when single payer representatives were "denied a seat at the table" and the door was propped open for the private insurers, we knew that higher than necessary premiums designed to generate funds to sustain operations that are not conducive to high quality, low cost healthcare would be the inevitable results. Things like profit margins, funds for advertising, excessive CEO salaries and entire departments who's sole purpose is to find a reason to deny your claims. None of which do one damn thing to improve on the quality of healthcare or reduce the cost.

Once the Tea Party/GOP accepts the fact that America wants and repeatedly voted for a better system of healthcare, (one on par with those found in the rest of the industrialized world) and quits throwing temper tantrums and holding the nation hostage over their own inability to admit defeat, maybe we can get on to the task of fixing ObamaCare.

If you really want to bring an end to this nonsense, write your congressional representative and tell them to quit holding the rest of us hostage, accept that ObamaCare is the law of the land and get on with fixing it. Quit with the endless and futile attempts to repeal, quit trying to defund it at every turn and quit trying to delay it, it's the law of the land. FIX IT! Take the profit out of healthcare and FIX IT!

It's their choice but I can tell you this; If they choose only to obstruct at every turn, they do so at their own peril because the rest of us are going to drag their asses into the 21st century even if it means doing so while they're kicking and screaming the whole way.

Perhaps.

But don't you wonder why they didn't just address one problem at a time ?

Like somehow pass single issue legislations to solve the pre existing conditions dilemma ?

In fact many states had already opened pools for that.

Then work on one or two more like some kind of expansions of Medicaid and Medicare.

It could have been simple and without confusion.

The Corporatist organization is stronger than any government anywhere and is the most powerful outfit in history.

The biggest problem is the corruption, not the system.

lol! what a funny thread.
of course the price is lame! why do you think the republicans came up with this whole type of plan back in the 90's. it sure wasn't to help people, it was to be a handout to the insurance companies!
funny how the right conveniently forgets stuff like that and then has the temerity to even say things like "socialism".
America has slipped so far to the right that they don't even know what the left is anymore.

They came up with it, but it never made it out of any committee.

And there were differences.

It was a show back then to expose how silly it was (and still is).

And PPACA got zero votes from Republicans in 2009.

The political supporters of PPACA were/are Democrat congress, Obama, and all Left Wing NGOs.

They *own* it 100%..

The main benefactors are the medical corporation complex.

Corporatism is ultra Left Wing, not right wing !!!!!

So many great points in this thread. I don't support the "Affordable Health Care Act"......the bottom line is health care is NOT affordable, and while some issues have been addressed to "force" insurance companies to give an inch when it comes to REASONABLE payouts and put somewhat of a stop to not protecting chronically ill people...the ends don't justify the means.

I wonder how co-pays are calculated? I don't see how this helps people that just simply can't afford it. The one's that will suffer are the one's that find their assets / home in jeopardy and a "blank check" written to the IRS to collect your forced debt.

On a side note: I watched the most disgusting show the other day, I was doing chores and just left it on in the background..it was called "Married to Medicine" if anyone doesn't think this is a money game...this horrible show sure brought it home for me....

Did anyone else read about that Chad Henderson guy who was preaching about how easy it was to get Obamacare, got all that attention from the media, and then was caught lying? I knew people are supposed to submit myths of Obamacare but I didn't think they had paid employes actually posting lies. The funny thing is his story was tweeted out by the Obamacare group and other related groups even though the info he gave was wrong, the people who are heavily involved in Obamacare didn't even know the right rates!

Washington Post

Caught lying

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has been President Barack Obama’s main organizer and cheerleader for Obamacare since its inception. But you know the government-run health care plan is bad when the Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department can’t get anyone from her own state to sign up for it

60 hours (and counting) on hold?

356,000 uninsured Kansans – and not one single report to my office of a Kansan successfully signing up for ObamaCare.

He said he signed up at midnight until 3 am when it first came into effect but he was caught lying about actually buying a plan and the rates. The kid volunteers for Obama’s Organizing For America group and on his facebook said he is paid to promote for an advocacy group but of course he now says that was a "joke".

Chad Henderson Facebook post

Here's the story including the link to his facebook post: Chad Henderson

I just think it's funny all these websites who have been only publishing good things about Obamacare and saying they "know" what Obamacare is all about didn't even realize the kids info was wrong heck even the group started by an Obama ex White House (to promote Obamacare) had no idea either. I will admit I haven't been against Obamacare in the past but I'm starting to change my mind now.
