When do we get to call his bluff?

When enough people get tired of all the games they are playing in Washington.
When 50 or 60 million American citizens descend on Washington and put a stop to this madness.
When we as a people question why 3 elected officials are holding our nation hostage.
When it comes to the point we realize the elected feel they are more important than "We the People".

Today, tomorrow, next week, whenever. When we decide collectively to stop all this madness and hit
the "Restart" button.

Then and only then.

The government likes to extort and govern by crisis.

I feel terrible for all those on Social Security, but it's like living at the base of a volcano while it spews lava, but still hasn't erupted. You know it's coming, then you act shocked when it erupts.

Anyone with half a brain, KNEW economic collapse was inevitable, whether you CHOSE to the government and government educated financial experts, determines your future.

In reality, the only thing we are entitled to is pay taxes and die.

I've been preparing for my family, I wish more Americans would do the same.

It doesn't required building bunkers and spending 10k on food; just get enough to eat, wear, and survive.

This is going to happen in our generation people.

While what you say is true, the president is the one clearly to blame for this legislation. Virtually none of the crap he claimed was going to happen is happening. Basically no one in congress read the damn bill, yet they should be held to their vote? If our system was remotely reasonable they would not be allowed to vote without reading it.

They had the choice to read it, if they chose to be be absolute idiots, they should be held to their vote like glue. If the people choose mentally deficient representatives, they shouldn't get to mulligan unpopular decisions.

The cost of the premiums and the costs of the federal funding are now skyrocketing over what was promised. Thousands, and thousands are getting cut to part time - that wasn't supposed to happen either. Do you really think it is wrong to work to get rid of a federal program that does not work, or should we be made to suffer with it for all time, because it was voted for?

That's how the "democratic process" works. If you want to fix the funding, let the government dictate prices to the insurance companies instead of the other way around. As for workers being cut to part time? Remove the clause allowing companies to not pay for healthcare if an employee works 29 hours or less.

proximo
In polls 60 percent don't want it, Congress, and virtually every large company are getting waivers to get out of this horrible program. The ones who voted for it do not want it to apply to them or their staff - that literally says it all.

What the people want and what they actually need are two completely different things. What the US needs is a single-payer system, but obstructionist politicians forced the worthless compromise that is the ACA. Hell yes it should apply to congress as well, I'll give you that much, and their shady dealings need to be put to a halt.

proximo
But because Obama and the democrats want it even though it will destroy the economy, no one should oppose it. Sorry I don't buy that.

What's going to destroy the economy is the utter lack of sense in the Republican party, who apparently have no problem holding an entire country hostage to remove something that's been passed by all three branches of government.

I am no expert here, but I thought they had to pass ACA to see what was in it?

Pardon my ignorance I try to follow along but, work takes up most of my time.

I guess this is how austerity measures start, debt ceiling is not raised and we have to "balance" the budget so bye bye entitlements and hopefully pork spending and military spending!

No one needs to fear this manufactured "debt ceiling" crisis. The world economy is not going to collapse. the sky is not falling. If you can't recognize political BS by now then you haven't been paying attention for the last 50 years.
This is the same old nonsense: create a crisis, blame it on your political opponent, and then take the credit when the crisis is solved. Nothing new under the sun.

I am sick of listening the endless stream of lies and fear mongering coming out of Washington. It's all BS designed to keep the sheep off balance and in fear. Judging from many of the posts on this thread it is working quite well.

Ok, it sounds like you realize the bill as it stands sucks. I also agree a true single payor system would be a big improvement over what we have - but that was never the plan. This was all about helping the insurance companies, big pharma, and the giant hospital chains rape the American people for their gain.

Just because they pretend this some kind of socialist system, and will bring medical care for everyone, that is impossible without cutting costs. There literally is not enough wealth to pay for healthcare at its current costs for every citizen.

I think you are so caught up in your ideology you want to support this garbage simply because it is sold as something you think you have to support.

Sorry dude, the debt crisis is no scare tactic. The truth is its 100 times worse than they are letting on. This is simple math, and their is only two possible results, massive inflation, or massive deflation and debt default. Either way Americas greatest depression is now all but guaranteed.

What happened in Greece is nothing compared to what will happen here, because there is no one to bail us out. I strongly suggest you prepare, because despite what the fed would have you believe, they cannot hold off reality for much longer.

If you dont raise the debt ceiling you defualt on your debt and your doller will collaspe to the value of belly button fluff.

In case some of you numb skulls dont understand.

Before this shutdown started the US econemy was growing which = more jobs.

If you country econemy implodes which it will on it present course that will = no jobs.

If you default on the 17th in 5 years time you will all be sitiing in cardboard boxed dresseing in rags begging the few (most likley 1% ers) with jobs for scraps of food. But hey least you stuck it to Obama! Loseing your job, home and most likley health is so worth it! O wait no you didnt stick it to anyone cause while you are living in the gutter, obama and all the other politicians will be living in there mansions laughing with the other 1% ers.

Hell even if the worse doesnt happen and you pay your debts by the 17th this shutdown has most likley shaved 0.7-1% off your growth. Thats a few hundred thousand American jobs that just went POOF! Infact while you speak every secoun a American job will be vannishing.
And I though you wanted people off welfare?
Great logic! Destroy jobs to get more off welfare

It funny I can really gauge who the smart Americans are who the dumb ones are on ATS this week. Those supporting the shutdown= dumb!

Partially correct...

Before Obamacare the economy was growing(few companies hiring).

Now....good friggin luck finding a job. Hours are being cut and people are being layed off in droves because of forced healthcare.

Companies are not hiring, they are waiting in limbo freaking out.

Not good. The shutdown and debt ceiling is the ultra sweet icing on the bs cake.

We need a big friggin bandaid this time.

Its gonna be a long winter on this side of the pond.

Gotta buy more food supplies

Obama has threatened this before a few times. Last time was the August before last. I wasn't surprised that people forgot about it in time for the election.

I get the gist of what he's saying there. Right now, SS checks are still going out, they're covered. If we hit the debt ceiling on the 17th, fin, there's no more bogus money for diddly squat. It's pretty simple to grasp in plain English.

I don't care what bills they put forth, what promises any party can make, I don't see a way around hitting the ceiling. This country has turned into a manic woman on Rodeo Drive with every credit card she could get her hands on. She maxed them out, and now there's nothing left for more impulse buying. Worse yet, there's not a dime left anywhere in sight to pay OFF those purchases at all. That's what the US has become. We're fricking BROKE. BROKE. We have more bills than we can pay in this country. We've lived beyond our means and now we're going to literally & figuratively start paying for that immature mistake. We can't ponzi scheme it through the year any more, the debt collectors are going to start collecting their payments one way or the other, and no begging or pleading or promising is going to stop that. Raising the debt ceiling is literally just putting a band-aid on the severed vein. Eventually, you'll bleed out half-assing it like that.

If you don't own a gun, this might be a good time to purchase one.

If they cut off all of the entitlement checks, you may very well need one to protect yourself.

So i guess your saying anybody who receives food stamps, welfare and other government assistance programs, will lose their #, and start trying to break into your homes?

is there any chance the US will go into war with any country who's not an ally in order to take them over and regain power/money thus leading to world war chaos?

i don't know much about the US economy and its status since i'm living overseas, but from what i see in the news and newspapers, the US government shutdown doesn't seem like such a big deal around here. At least not big enough for anyone to be talking about anyways.

What i also want to know is, will this situation affect anything overseas? Is there anything people overseas should be doing asides from eating popcorn?

Mike Rivero says it best

This is pure scare-mongering by Obama. Money for the Social Security checks is already supposed to be in the trust fund, paid for by deductions from paychecks over the workers life. That is not the government's money. It is the peoples' money entrusted to the government. Obama has no need to raise the debt ceiling to return that money, nor does he have a legal right to withhold it from the seniors. Unless, of course, he is willing to admit that the US Government, starting with Clinton, has been "borrowing" that cash and replacing it with Treasury Bills which they cannot redeem, in effect embezzling the retirement funds of working Americans!

In the predictions forum I wrote a thread predicting this would mark the beginning of the quick down hill slide for the dollar no matter what the president or congress decide.

You can't make money out of nothing and expect to prosper forever. It's crazy.

I have wondered if we would go ahead and start a war with Syria, but it still doesn't change the money problem.

As someone stated earlier on here, we are BROKE. As in, we have NO MONEY.

I have children, and I will do whatever it takes to keep them fed. If you don't have children you could never understand. Food stamps or no food stamps, people will find a way to take care of their own.
