I'll just say, as someone that subsists off of disability payments (due to blindness), this fear mongering is ridiculous and senseless.

What the heck am I supposed to be able to do about the debt ceiling? What the heck is my 78 year old mom living on SS supposed to do about the debt ceiling?

Why threaten US? Will Congress be losing THEIR paychecks? HAVE they lost them with the shutdown?

No?

Hmmm...

Same boat here, and I do Love how everyone always refers to the old folks losing their ss checks. How about people in their 30's who are disabled and receive ss? How about those same people in their 30's with 5 kids depending on those ss checks? Yes I am talking about myself here and the current boat I find myself on. Five yrs ago when I was working 80+ hour work weeks and pulling in a great income for my family that me and the wife built this was a non issue, so anyone out there who thinks they would never be in this boat count your blessings and pray for lady luck to keep on providing for you.

The worst cases of hyperinflation in history

Flip through the slide show. There will be one in that set getting bumped soon to make room for what may take #1. Our own trip through the mix master.

This is math. It's so basic in 101 economics I want to scream. The media plays this out like it's some dark magic and alchemy when it's simple. Print more money without support and backing for value, inflation is the result as the ratio crosses a threshold the market will tolerate. We likely crossed that threshold quite some time ago but sheer force of will and international inter-connectivity has prevented the bill from being called outright.

That won't last TOO much longer...so there is absolutely nothing funny meant in any way at all. Again, history has shown what we're doing for outcomes we're headed to. It's cause and effect and we have people in Washington simply playing out the clock to enjoy the party one more day....and then just one more.

One day at a time is how it's been going. Math simply doesn't forgive dumb at this level.

If we hit the debt ceiling, it's game over. I recommend getting a job today if you don't have one, before everyone else is forced to and it's impossible to get one.

That wont help!

If you hit the debt ceiling those with job will be loseing them. No one will be safe.

If you don't own a gun, this might be a good time to purchase one.

If they cut off all of the entitlement checks, you may very well need one to protect yourself.

If they cut off the checks that senior citizens and disabled people are entitled to then yes, things could get pretty ugly. Maybe even violent.

Who knows, maybe that's just what the government wants.

That being said-- yeah, if there is violence, it will probably be the wealthy they go for. Wealthy republican politicians, if they have a sense of fairness. Wouldn't that be darkly humorous, and poetically just?

Maybe I am just completely wrong here, but haven't people been saying for years now that things will have to get a whole lot worse before they start to get better? Maybe defaulting is what it has come to.. to wake people up and fight against this government once they have nothing left to lose. Not defaulting just carries on this charade longer and it will get worse with Obamacare. The longer the "worse" takes to get here, the harder it will be on everyone to fix it. I'm just so sick of all this and it's sad that something so drastic may be needed to wake people up on a larger scale, but maybe it has to happen?

For the record, I am not rich.. on the contrary, I am disabled and unable to work and I know I would suffer from this, but maybe I still have a little faith left that people will ultimately come together and help one another while we work together to take our country back from this corrupt circus sideshow that our government has become. Isn't it time to end the illusion? So long as people have something to lose, they will never wake up and how much longer will all of this go on if the debt ceiling is raised? We are just lifted up higher making that inevitable fall even greater.

You're right. And I'm sorry to hear that these clowns' (the government, collectively) threats are hitting home for you.

And you have an excellent point about the checks for Congress. Since they're the ones that are deciding there should be a shutdown, perhaps they should be the first ones to pay-- show that they are willing to make a sacrifice too, if they expect everyone else should. I mean that's only fair, right?

That said, I wonder if they imagine it's "safe" to P*** off the elderly and disabled. Some people are disabled for physical issues, of course-- other for severe mental / emotional issues. Meaning some of this segment they're talking about robbing are younger, physically healthy, but really emotionally disturbed people... taking away their assistance and making them desperate doesn't seem like a good idea for all kinds of reasons.

I wonder how many mentally ill are on disability in the DC area alone....

The way obama has handled himself so far in this situation leaves no doubt that he isn`t presidential material, he doesn`t have what it takes to be a president.

as far as social security payments being tied to the debt ceiling, that should never have happened in the first place, congress should have left the social security trust fund alone and not stole all the money from it. There`s nothing in the trust fund except a bunch of worthless government IOU`s and we have to borrow money every year to pay out the benefits.

"send us your money and we will put it in a trust fund and when you get old you`ll have money to help you in your retirement years"

just another promise the government reneged on.

So instead of riding out the storm with more debt ceiling increases until this traitor of a president gets the hell out of office(hopefully before 2016), you prefer a partial default that would primarily punish SS receipents and other welfare recepients?

I feel peoples frustration but we have to be careful what we wish for and what is the best way to handle this problem so that it affects the least amount of people in the least painful way. I would much rather let obama get his way with ACA and cross my fingers that the economy remains half-way saveable than throw the towel and allow chaos to ensue.

2016 is at most 3 years away and congressional seats should change by then. Hopefully we get TP members in government by then and have some Occupy folks running from the democrat side. And get libertarian and green parties on the map for a change. I really do think people are learning their lesson well by now. Vote responsibly and hold your representatives accountable for their actions!

I guess I'm really missing on communicating this clearly... My bad.

I am for a 100% full and TOTAL collapse. Not partial anything... OR... Doing everything possible to keep the system going well, smoothly and with a little crisis as possible ...like they mean to do it that way... until the math catches up to us anyway, which will happen.

It's the half way playing around between those two extremes that is killing us in slow motion. A crash will be painful but it will pass. History shows that. It will pass within years. This stupidity of stretching it out could actually play out another generation if other nations don't get rude before that.

All, or nothing...but no more half way, 'hedge the bets' and play everything to everyone B.S.. That is what has all but destroyed this once great nation and makes us a regular joke to the world at the moment, IMO.

Trust me, its the wrong approach. It would be the equivilant of going to the casino and blowing all your hard-earned money trying to recoup your initial losses at the blackjack table. "Damm my bad luck, I am going to sit here until I win". Next thing you know you cant afford to put gas in your car to drive home.

Almost happened to me. I went to atlantic city with $200 and ended up coming back with $20, just enough. Now I know that $500 and come back with $200. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

I don't think he has a choice in this matter, he is explaining the consequences of defaulting on our debt so people understand. There is nothing he could do to make the social security or disability checks arrive if we do default.

But notice that he is warning of an economic shutdown, of people not getting disability or social security checks, and others being out of work from the government shutdown at the same time.

If this goes through, it is definitely a problem, like you should go buy extra food early. As in for real.
edit on 3-10-2013 by darkbake because: (no reason given)

Do not try to spin this like he is trying to help people understand the consequences for their own good. That is total BS. All he cares about is trying to shift the blame off himself.

If he cared at all about the future of this country, he would explain social security,Medicaid, and welfare are all guaranteed to be cut massively, and absolutely nothing can be done to stop it.

Instead the scumbag continues to lie about the issue and pretend more debt will make everything ok, when too much debt is going to be the reason the economy craters.

So Obama has chosen now to ask the public to take responsibility and have a choice after he's buried the public under a mountain of debt? where was the choice then?
you've got to be kidding.

I'm surprised to see this here, I would think with all that we have seen over the years and all that is discussed here people would have been preparing or just this occasion or even some worse ones.

Since the housing market collapsed I have been stocking up on can food, and donating excess in order to make sure my supplies are not out dated if and when something happens.

I have also invested in zero energy items easy to replicate but fundamentally necessary for survival in the event of Power out since the New England fall snow storm knocked power out for two weeks. Such as lanterns, lantern oil, wicks, wood stove, clay pot water filtration. Keep in mind these things help in a bankrupt economy as I can get firewood far easier then I can pay a over inflated gas/electric bill. I can not make gas, nor make money from no work but I can go into the woods and get wood. I can make or find natural oils, I can collect rain water and I can grow food.

I love electricity for all the things it provides, but I love more the ability to take the required things for survival fully into my own hands with zero dependency on another. Any long term event we can expect that new Brita filters for water, pellets for pellet stoves, solar panel and battery parts may no longer be available and yet the need for what they could provide would remain, however investing the technology that allowed our ancestors survive and sustain for thousands of years may not be such a bad idea, after all they did a great many things with very little resources.

I'm however not suggesting we go native and run around in stick huts, but simply use our heads be inventive and most of all appreciate the wealth of knowledge our ancestors have collectively left behind that has allowed the human race to thrive as such.

All Obama can do is sign or veto bills. Congress proposes, discusses, passes, then hands bills to the President. The BUDGET is the responsibility of CONGRESS. What about this do people not understand? Increasing payouts for farmers (corporate owned mostly now) and decreasing food stamps for the poor. Giving tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy, letting Wall Street and the Bankers do whatever they want... all Congress. Spending increases and spending decreases, Congress. Tax increases and tax decreases, Congress. Quit blaming Obama for everything. Spending is Congress' job and responsibility, which they have shown complete Irresponsibility in taking care of! The Sequestration was their own idea to force themselves to pass the budget. It didn't happen. Shutting down the government. Congress. And about what? Obamacare. Which was debated for 14 months, then passed in both the House and the Senate. Then passed the challenge at the Supreme Court. Then Obama was re-elected. Then Congress tried to repeal or deny funding over 40 times. Now they resort to shutting down the government. This is a minority trying to dictate terms to a majority. That is NOT how government is supposed to work! Don't blame Obama for Congress, specifically the Republicans and Tea Party, for not doing their own job, which by the way, they still get paid for while other Federal workers are laid off and not able to pay bills.

As bad as obama is....

The problem is with alot of these blockheads is they seem to want a figure head to blame.

It seem they cant comprehend the concept of group responsiblity. IE the whole goverment is to blame not just obama.

Yeshe has been soley responisble directly for a few goof ups like bengazi.

But this is whole goverment screw up.

I could see violence attempts coming, when you mess with peoples money-people die. A fact of life anywhere in the world. The American public could start taking it out on public officials'.

The anger I see around is starting to boil.

scary times ahead.

Lucky for me this shutdown doesn't affect me, so I could care less either way.

You seem to think the president has no power and in the same paragraph you show how much he has. There are 3 sides to this and he should be the voice of reason right now. I am not laying blame, I am just pointing out that in other times in history cooler heads prevailed especially when the president was not trying to 'keep a legacy' and decided to do what the country wants. PPACA and the other addedums barely passed and after 40 tries to stop it I would think he would want to talk and he is not. Instead, he is fear mongering that the Teaparty and republicans will take away the SS checks.

While what you say is true, the president is the one clearly to blame for this legislation. Virtually none of the crap he claimed was going to happen is happening. Basically no one in congress read the damn bill, yet they should be held to their vote? If our system was remotely reasonable they would not be allowed to vote without reading it.

The cost of the premiums and the costs of the federal funding are now skyrocketing over what was promised. Thousands, and thousands are getting cut to part time - that wasn't supposed to happen either. Do you really think it is wrong to work to get rid of a federal program that does not work, or should we be made to suffer with it for all time, because it was voted for?

In polls 60 percent don't want it, Congress, and virtually every large company are getting waivers to get out of this horrible program. The ones who voted for it do not want it to apply to them or their staff - that literally says it all.

But because Obama and the democrats want it even though it will destroy the economy, no one should oppose it. Sorry I don't buy that.
