I did not know this. It is a little disgusting but so are a lot of things involving our food and the manufacturing of it. It's just a little fun fact I had to share. I always wonder how folks figured out these things the very first time.

www.foxnews.com...

Next time you pick up a vanilla candy, think twice. A chemical compound used in vanilla flavored foods and scents comes from the butt of a beaver.

Castoreum comes from a beaver's castor sacs, located between the pelvis and base of the tail. Due to its proximity to the anal glands, the slimy brown substance is often mixed with gland secretions and urine.

"I lift up the animal's tail," Joanne Crawford, a wildlife ecologist at Southern Illinois University told National Geographic. "I’m like, 'Get down there, and stick your nose near its bum.'"

"People think I'm nuts," she added. "I tell them, 'Oh, but it's beavers; it smells really good.'"

Beavers use the brown slime, often compared to a thinner version of molasses, to mark their territory. The musky, vanilla scent is attributed to a beaver's diet of bark and leaves.

Yeah gross stuff for sure. I was worried as I often have raspberry cordial and it's also uised for that flavour too.

but luckily, we only use a toxic poison that is banned in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan.

I sent 'golden circle'
a query as to why we use this number for a flavour, no reply.

suffice to say no more raspberry cordial for me.. id rather, to be honest, sniff a beaver...

I guess when you put it that way then beaver bum is a safer alternative.
Good luck getting an answer from any of those factories about their ingredients. It seems like they should be obligated to give an answer to any question about the safety of their products. I suppose that would be too much to ask.

BTW, I just have to say that you constantly have me literally LOL and your avatar is the end all be all!! (Imagine the old ATS thumbs up right here)

Hmmm I LOVE the smell of Vanilla tastes good Too! And I LOVE them cute Beavers!

Go figure...

Of course I am talking about real vanilla extract not some "natural flavorings"! Now as far as how Beavers bums smell, that is news to me!

It's funny cause if I remember correctly Wynona's smelled like 7 layers, from eating at Taco Bell!

HA! I know what you mean! I have a problem resisting doing the exact same thing. I always lose the debate in myself when it comes to click it or leave it alone. It's a sickness I think!
