Hopefully this is in the correct place. This is a news article relating to robots being used in the war. I thought this would be a more appropriate board for this article because it relates to weaponry in war.

UNITED NATIONS (TheBlaze/AP) — A draft United Nations report says that killer robots that can attack targets without any human input “should not have the power of life and death over human beings.” It deals with legal and philosophical issues of giving robots lethal powers over humans, echoing the “Terminator” movies and countless other science fiction novels and films.

The United Nations basically wants to put a halt to killer robots or robots design to kill. With Drones being the latest in advanced technology being used. I wouldn't be surprised that various designs of robots would be used my various militaries. I wouldn't be surprise as the years come and go that robotics used in the military would cause major debates. What do you say about this subject. I know many on ATS would agree that we should put a roadblock to killer robots. I cannot imagine having Arnold come to my house and blow me to pieces with no sentiment. Just kidding. But I would love to hear your opinions.

I know there are debates about the use of drones. But various countries continue to use them. Also, I have heard of future soldiers would have some type of Halo/ samus/ Iron Man robotic suits that would be used in future wars. But I know the article states the U.N wants to put a road block to Terminator type robots.

I believe this United Nations rule proposition has "some" merit.

If "robots" were allowed to kill a human being without the direct real-time authorization from an actual human being, there might be possible major flaws with self replicating robots that create their own military bases and assume a mind of their own and start blowing up the wrong side on their own behalf.

But then again, the United Nations wants to control the ability of humans to obtain any firearm one pleases, so take this comment with a grain of salt.

I doubt robots would become self-aware and some how the events of Terminator and numerous other similar scifi films will play out in real life. Personally I'm critical what a lot of people in power have to put on the table. Knowing there are crooked politicians and leaders out there. Just my two cents.

I have never seen all the Matrix films (no spoilers please). But I can see where you're coming from with Skynet in the Terminator films. If a highly advanced super computer becomes self-aware and is able to read this. Please don't kill me!

Does anyone really believe for even one instant that just because the UN would say NO to killer robots that the US, China and Russia would stop their development? Let alone not put them into operation the first chance they get. With the use of drones and the idea that it's just like a video game, they can't wait to turn this loose on an unsuspecting enemy.

I'm all for robotics for peaceful usage but since this is mil hardware you know they will implement it asap.

Anyone reading this, please look into DARPA. When I was looking around on youtube, I stumbled across it....

To see soldiers walking around with what they were, It made me think......WOW...this technology is like 20 years old, It just makes me wonder what they have now.

If I could link to youtube....your mind would be blown.........mine was....

Type the URL of the vid or vids, and I'd embed them for you, if you weren't sure how.

Right now that's probably true, but Ive watched shows on this where they talk about how that as technology advances they think it would be better to create robots that can make limited calculations and thoughts on their own in order to keep the robot intact if it gets cut off from human control, so if theirs already ideas of semi self-aware robots on the table. Plus other nations could get ideas like this too. So I think it may be a good idea to limit military use of robotics to controlled machines because of what the advances in technology can bring.

I agree with you.

If it becomes international law, only the law abidding nations will follow it, but the insane and the criminals will only show their middle finger to it, the way disneyland idiots believe removing guns will end violence.

And it will be the same disneyland idiots, this time the devil riddled UN Human Rights Council and Human Rights group that WILL TARGET those whom are only defending themselves, and make huge loud cries over it BUT NEVER the insane, the cunning and the criminals that develope and use them.

History repeat itself. It follows a set pattern in human nature. May mankind not be fools anymore. We don't live in disneyland.

The only reason why autonomous robots without humans in the loop will not exist is simply because NO MORTAL have that tech or even dare trust such tech to leave automous robots on their own to kill, except fools and the insane. Those robots may jolly well turn around and harm those same fools and idiots who created them, which may not be such a bad thing figuratively after all.

Rather, the focus should be upon COUNTER MEASURES. Killer robots are not as invincible as they seem, even if the tech hurdles are overcome. What one mortal creates, another can destroy. Killer robots are only a jumble of wires and electronics, protected by hard shells and powered by nukes or cold fusion should such nanotization becomes avaliable one day.

There lays their detection and vulnerabilities, if they are misused or malfunctions, and the deterences for the futile effort to waste billions in a piece of vulnerable robot for war.

We've lived up to see "better life", where kids in some states here have no sufficient food! Crisis is still we us and we have got to survive through it yet! And amid this mess our top brass in Pentagon have lost every sense of reality I suspect.
They are now set to deploy some "additional" missiles in Poland! Madness, I'd call this! My brother, a specialist on missiles... engtines or what, commented the latest field tests and he asserts the much boasted missile defense system is "quite an imperfect one" and needs hell of money to be upgraded.
Pretty fed up with this waste of money to support or defend our so called allies, Poland and other, lacking might all of them! Goof for nothing, all of them, even Japs!

let technology advance, today its attacking us tomorrow its our homes helping us. if we as a species are stupid enough let free thinking robots have their own governmant, one day they will attack us and force us all to become robots, just evolution, small pockets of humans will still exist and when a emp comes it will be our time to rule again and hopefully we do it right nexttime round.

Being blown away is being blown away surely?

Doesn't make any real difference if a Human being does it, or an autonomous robot...the resulting carnage is the same.

The UN should first be thinking about putting a halt to Humans killing Humans before they decide what method is right or wrong...don't you?

Yes to Killer Robots!!!!!

#in A!! I love the future. We are closer now to flying cars, virtual reality, laser weapons and killer robots then ever before. Whoever doesn't think this is awesome is so wrong. I actually envy my kids at this point because i see some wild # on the horizon for them and it's not even halfway through the century.

I am telling you this right now, when cybernetic implants are about to go mainstream, invest!! All you sci-fi readers know what i am talking about....the good writers are always the best prophets of the future.

Can you say Nanotech tattoo's anybody?

I'm a bit concerned about their new acronym: "lethal autonomous robots", LARs. They weren't using this language so far...

I understand a robot can be taught all the "rules of engagement", but killing becomes too mechanical... I suppose PTSD will go down, though.

Whats the point of international law?
The U.S of A threw out the geneva convention when it suited them when it chose to torture prisoners after 9/11!
Whose to say if they found it to their advantage they wouldn't just break the law and use autonomous killer robots?

Good luck,

How are we to get to the singularity and fight terminators if we stop the production of killer robots, jeez. We haven't done anything right so far, why start now?

Bow down to your new Mechanical shiny metal assed overlords!

It's only 2 decades away from happening, that's about the time I give a rouge element with a brilliant mind, unable to be hired because he or she values skills and experience over friends and networking, to build the software AI that takes over all other computers and turns them into Skynet.

If it isn't apparent now, it should be soon, that people don't become mad on their own, it's takes a good bit of social conditioning mixed with social interactions in the worst ways possible. Be nice to people, you may very well just avoided the robot Armageddon.

Many combat actions are halted by troops on the ground ,they just want deniability and autonomy to circumvent laws.
