I am a First Nations Person.

I disagree with accusations that using Native stereo types as team names/mascots is a deliberately racist act.
If you stop the use of Red Skins,Chiefs and Braves, you will also have to prevent the use of " Cowboys" they were portrayed in movies as killers of many Natives.
What about Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! We should not be using potentially endangered animals.
How about the Saints? isn't that exploiting religion?

May be we should change the name of Indiana, after all, a state should not exploit a Native name.

How about other things in this world?
Remember the Ford Probe? Would that name not cause unease among alien abduction survivors?
Dodge Magnum? Oh no that reminds people of guns.

Really people; this politically correct crap has to stop.
There are way more important things to worry about.
Just my 2c.

I really don't understand the offense caused by the Redskins or the Florida Seminoles with the war cry thing or the Atlanta Braves(?) fans doing the tomahawk chop thing. Several cultures have been singled out to be the mascots of a sports franchise because they are independent, tough and fierce like the Celtics or the Texans or the Vikings. Nobody's gonna name their team after something mundane like the "Pennsylvania Amish" or the "Washington Politicians". I kinda take pride that a sports franchise sees our ancestors as having that much courage and strength of will to keep going on.

please xplain what is independent, tough and fierce about redskins.
.

there is nothing more mundane than a packer. that's an assembly line worker. your argument is invalid

Then why don't we leave this issue to those of the First Nations.

What's the new name?
Washington Jellied Eels! (that offends me, I was once harmed by an eel.)

If we cater to every whim, then we leave a sterile, cold world for the next generation.

Think you can whine about pc more? It is a derogatory name plain and simple. And a cold sterile world is better than one that accepts racism like you do.
no......
your emotionally child like mind thinks that it is derogatory.......
if it hurts your emotions, learn to have better mental strength....
and this advice is for all the piece of crap(PC) brigade kids....

Hold on there Bucko! This isn't about accepting racism by any means. This is a sports team name, nothing more. Beezer is right on with this. This world, especially the united states is far to wrapped up with PC. I live way up north with lots of native Americans who don't think the name is offensive. In fact I have native American friends whos favorite team is the redskins and I've never heard them complain about the name, even when asked by others. This is really no big deal, and shouldn't be treated as such. And last I looked on the news we the people have bigger issues to confront in this country other than catering to the ultra sensitive people who get offended to easily. My advice to them, suck it up, and quit being baby's over something so trivial, and start putting all that effort into something that really matters in life. They could call a team the "Honky's" for all I care, and it just doesn't matter, but that name does sound pretty dorky.

As a Native American, I find absolutely nothing wrong with sports teams using these terms. If anything, as previously stated, it is a way of paying respect to all Native American cultures. With all the horrible things that have happened to American Indians, you would think there would be bigger issues or concerns to get all riled up about.

I live in Cleveland and constantly see protesters outside before games boycotting the use of Chief Wahoo. I find it embarrassing that people of my ancestry really have nothing better to do than show up at ballparks to whine. Its almost as if they are more upset by the use of these logos than they are from having their lands stolen, people killed, etc. I have the ole Chief tattooed on me not because I'm from Cleveland, but because I'm an American Indian who lives in Cleveland and I find it as a nice tribute to my heritage.

Well stated, applause for you, and star. Careful though, buster2010 is gonna come back on now and say your actually white, or something to that effect now, and how we cant prove you're native. Like I stated above, its ultra/hyper sensitive people that can't let this go, and think we are the racist ones for calling it exactly like we see it, and they're the ones throwing temper tantrums over this and getting all worked up. At least I got a good laugh at the expense of all those fools on here that are running PC amok!

Wow really? Does that mean that white people aren't actually white? And black people aren't actually black!?

No #ing # man. Get over it.

Who even cares? The real irony is you got teams called Redskins and Vikings, yet the vast majority of players are Africans. Kind of makes the arguments seem pointless.

Well...I AM Native American...and I could care less. I almost don't care enough to even type this.
You can even call me Indian like the pilgrims did my ancestors...don't care.

How about we all grow a little thicker skin...then stop LOOKING at it.

You could rename the team THE WASHINGTON HUMANS!

Could name it the Washington Crackers and have the mascot be some old farmer.

not as catchy...tomahawk chop turns into the what...plow move?

First, they made Ole Miss change their mascot (the Rebs) because it was too offensive to blacks. Even though they had been the Rebels for over 100 years.

Now the Redskins. Everyone is too offended by everything these days. What a ridiculous society we live in. What about if she is called an indian? That racist Columbus gaven native americans tha name after all.

She probably just wants a huge settlement to open a casino or something.

I love that americans always find ways to make words sound dirty...

The N word... the C word... the F word... the R word... the N word... the W word... the K word... the G word... the T word... the Y word... the E word.... the U word... the B word... the X word... the Z word... the P word... the V word... the H word... the S word...

Quite frankly I dont know what most of these mean... and neither do you, I just made them up, but they do sound quite dirty when said this way, dont they?

Fascinating.

(specially if you read my post with the accent of Stewie from Family Guy)

You say it's an "indian with a baseball cap and a feather". I say it's a white person in redface or a redface mask with his hair slicked to the sides. Let's examine the evidence.

What baseball cap ever came in between the forehead and the eyebrows????? A baseball cap doesn't cut into the human skin so the eyebrows are in front of it. That would really hurt. ....... And don't baseball caps have bills sticking out over the eyes? That's the whole reason for a baseball cap, to block out the sun from the eyes so you can see the game, the batter, and the ball without having the sun in your eyes. But the main thing here is the eyebrows - no hat, cap, tophat, or baseball cap cuts into the face and goes behind the eyebrows. Only a mask with just the eyes cut out or a white guy with red makeup can look like that. Here is the pic:

Time to make a move, Beezzer. The Washington Cabbage Calmers.

Seriously though....this is someone who wants to challenge a word. Not the intent.

Words mean nothing. Intent does. Words are merely tools. Its how they are used that really matters.

every whim ? really ? if you have to go that far to make a point, you don't have one. my 12 year old daughter just told me it would be smart to get rid of it because the team name shouldn't insult people

I have to agree with Beezzer. P.C. has run amok to the point of outright hilarity.

Your daughter's reaction also doesn't surprise me. They've been trained to see this P.C. stupidity as 'the least we can do' from Kindergarten. The three R's come after the big I of Indoctrination.
