Conservationists have reacted with anger at the shooting of a lioness and her 2 cubs after they attacked and ate a women as she made love in the bush with her boyfriend and also attacked and ate an elderly man.

With fears growing that the lions had acquired a taste for human flesh and would kill again, vets in Harare said they should be darted and moved to a wildlife sanctuary.

Instead, they were shot by wardens from the Department of Parks and Wildlife Authority and a professional hunter.

Cavan Warran, for the Kariba Animal Welfare Trust which helped arrange the lions' shooting, said they wanted to dart and move them but the urgency of the problem gave them no time. "These lions had tasted human flesh and after consulting widely we concluded that they had to be euthanised immediately," he said

The Telegraph

It would appear that lions can indeed acquire a taste for human flesh and are aggressive hunters, moving into the center of heavily populated areas to hunt people with no fear of humans.

Man-Eater Lions

Conservationists are angry not only at the killing of the cats but also because poachers have caused the problem: the lioness had been wounded by a snare around its neck and; poachers had decimated the wildlife that the cats preyed on. The lioness also had a bad limp forcing it to hunt people.

Johnny Rodriques from the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said the female lioness had a wound from a snare around her neck, and had only started attacking humans because poachers had decimated stocks of other animals around Zimbabwe's vast Lake Kariba.

"The lioness was wounded, there was no food for her to eat so she and her cubs were a danger, and we should have been able to dart them and transfer them across the dam to a protected area," he said.

The Telegraph

Instead of moving the lioness, a professional hunter was hired to shoot the lioness and its two sub adult cubs.

Africa has less than 25,000 lions. 50 years ago, Africa had 200,000 lions.

Overpopulation, of guess which species, ferocious lions, or a more invasive species called...

Human.

Have you see some of those birth rates on the African continent. Nigeria for instance. Out the roof, unsustenable "love" making and whatever follows that (infant mortality, overpopulation, disease, STDS/HIV, ecologic disaster for ALL species because of one)

It's called homocentrism.
People and the needs/fears of people are more important than things that are not-people.

It's also a matter of psychology and economics.

Psychologically, the common superstition is that once an animal tastes humans, humans are just soooooo delicious that it will continue to prey primarily on humans and is thus labelled a "man eater". Disposing of man eaters makes all the superstitious people feel better.
Economically, a hunter and some bullets is far cheaper than the time and effort involved to relocate an animal feared as dangerous.
Further, on the psychological front, if the animal is simply moved, even to the other side of the planet, superstitious folk will still have fears that the animal will somehow magically find its way back to their area of the world because it's a man-eater, or something to that extent.

People are stupid and make stupid emotionally weighted decisions too.

Are we forgetting this animal killed a woman? The right thing to do was put it down. It was a danger to humans and regardless of the reasons anything that has become dangerous to humans after tasting blood can't be allowed the opportunity again.

In this case I think after weighing up all the information the authorities made the right call.

See my post above about homocentrism.

The lion isn't some criminal with reasoning facilities. It's a wild animal and a predator at that.
It only did what it did because that's what it's SUPPOSE to do.

Elevating hairless human monkeys above other animals and getting vengeance when a wild animal does what it does with any and every other prey animal is ridiculous.

Edit: If anything, more lions need to eat more people and regardless of whether they do or not, should be protected as untouchable like India's sacred cows, and left alone as nature's regulators of the invasive human species.

But the lions were eating people.

The most famous instance of man-eating lions occurred in 1898. Two male lions, later named Ghost and Darkness, unleashed a harrowing string of attacks on Ugandan railroad workers.

According to the original reports, the lions slew 135 African and Indian railroad laborers, sometimes dragging the men from their tents while they slept. The violence escalated to the point that construction halted.

After that, it took nine months for Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson to track down and shoot the two culprits, effectively ending the killing spree

As bad as I feel for the lion and her two cubs, the Kariba Animal Welfare Trust had initially wanted to dart and move the lions. After consulting widely, they decided that because the lions had tasted human flesh, the danger of the lions doing the same again was too high.

I certainly hope she'd gotten to the finale of the show before dinner came. Errr..
Sorry.. I know.. bad bunny. Not funny.. but.. Well.. I can't say the jokes that write themselves with this. The T&C God would hear and come running..but oh, they do. They just write themselves.

It's all tragic but the poachers are the root cause if she had been through a snare and lived. I'd say she had one heck of a grudge against anything human after that and opportunity was the only part needed to feed the need, so to speak. Err.. Yeah...

It's Saturday morning alright.

Starting with you I guess, are you tasty? Taking your point a bit too far there. There is some self hatred with this homocentrism and more blatantly with invasive species, I think it was called self preservation before. I don't condone the killing of the animal because of it's condition due to poachers but damn.

Judging from all the unsolicited attention I seem to get, one might be led to believe that yes, I am tasty.

If a lion, or a hummingbird, or some other animal were to kill me for food, I wouldn't want any harm to come to that animal for doing exactly what it's suppose to do.

How many BILLIONS of people are on this planet compared to how many Lions? or any other single animal species for that matter?

Insects outnumber us, sure, but, higher order animals?
Humans may very well outnumber rats.

Certainly it's sad when a person dies, but, WTF? Who the hell is stupid enough to go traipsing about the bush for some booty when there's Lions about? They're just asking for trouble. Darwin in action.
... caught in the act of making more stupid humans. Kill it with fire! Kill it with Lions!

Basically, your view is that man has no moral authority over beast, yet because humans have morals, they have less rights to behave as beasts?

Darwinism at it's finest for the couple boinking in the bush. You practically advertised "free distracted meal! Come get it!" I'd imagine it's equally inadvisable to do it in the thick of Kodiak country during a bear's hunting time - - you might be a meal.

How does no one see that man made this happen? Between the injuries, and killing off enough prey to leave a lion & cubs starving to the point of hunting people, this is a no-brainer. If they HAD to kill the lioness, the least they could have done was move the cubs elsewhere. 25,000 left and killing the young for the sins of the parent. Effed up thinking there.

Someone had a fetish. Who would be having sex in the woods around a lion and her cubs? The mother lioness didn't want her cubs exposed to porn?

I understand what you mean but I don't think it has to do with the quantity of people, insects (biomass). You refer to behavior like when a swarm of locusts devastates crops, but its not their fault because of monoculture. Or when an Algae bloom creates a fish kill in the ocean or in lakes, it might involve us because of the nutrients in agricultural runoff makes the algae grow too much.
Now how about poachers, humans interacting with animals in unwanted ways. People are desperate for money everywhere, I won't lay it on too thick that you have a huge advantage to poachers in satisfying your own needs. But you do damage too by the contempt in the words you chose to express yourself about humans.

ETA: Some humans might be considered to be snared like the lion and have very few options but to do destructive things that result in unwanted consequences

Yeah, she died stupidly, and ?

her fault i say.

Avood doing the nasty around lions, if you want to stay alive.

The lioness ate an easy meal, so whats the problem ?

They knew it was dangerous, but still....they tried......and got "served" (as a free meal ?)

Lions eat what they can, humans do the same,we're both predators species.

Lion did what all lions do, you never pass a free meal.
