I was always under the impression that Popes stay as being Pope until they die in the job, frail, terminally ill, evil or otherwise it's a job for the life of the post holder.. so this seems truly strange to me.. my mother, a devout Roman Catholic has always said he was a black and evil pope, given her advanced age she is not conspiracy minded and I have always found her comments about this pope interesting.

I guess we will see what happens next, and who they choose to replace him with.

Has any other Pope in History just "resign" all of a sudden?

As far as I know, this is close to being unique.

The Great Schism, when there were rival lines of Popes, was resolved by making the rivals resign.
Apart from that, the only "voluntary" resignation that comes to mind is the former hermit Celestine V, who discovered that he was a square peg in a round hole and gave it up. This was so unusual that Dante referred to it (probably) as "the great refusal".

It's always been assumed that Pope is Pope until he dies.

Some people dismiss numerological links as nonsense and simple pattern recognition. I feel otherwise.

I'm still studying numerology but I do know that 11 is a very powerful number. One of the master numbers.

Could he be terminally I'll?

Errr he is 85.... I would say that was terminal wouldn't you?

My input... Black mail. He has been blackmailed to step aside or be killed. The leverage... something unholly he has done that THEY who ever they are has evidence of.

Korg.

I found it interesting that this was the last comment from the Pope on Twitter yesterday:

We must trust in the mighty power of God’s mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new.

The last Pope was ill yet he never resigned so I find it hard to believe the reason why this Pope is resigning is due to ill health - I have a feeling something else must be going on.

I thought the Council of Cardinals voted on who becomes Pope? (white smoke, etc).

Anyhoo, he is in his 80's and in bad health so it isn't that surprising. For me, the really surprising bit was voting him as Pope in the first place (seeing as how he was so old and in bad health) - it was obvious from the get go he would a "short term" Pope.

I looked up your link about the last 10 popes and had a bit of a chuckle regarding the prophecy of Saint Malarchy as I was calling him..... till I saw this and my blood froze when I realized it was regarding Benecit XVI

In 1909, while granting an audience, pope Pius X leaned back and closed his eyes. Suddenly he "awoke" and cried out: "What I see is terrifying. Will it be myself? Will it be my successor? What is certain is that the pope will quit Rome, and in leaving the Vatican, he will have to walk over the dead bodies of his priests."
."

Meh he most likely grew some morality and decided he didn't want
to cover for the horrid things the church does, those who thinks
this meets some kind of prophecy would be incorrect, if he did
this for the specific reason of making said prophecy come true
that kinda makes the idea of prophecy a moot point......

Yes, he may be very old and of ill health...but you would think he would serve until he was literally in his death bed.

Oh, you mean the CCTV of him balls deep in the Lead Chorister, whilst in full Nazi Youth garb?

Nah, i just think he is old and knackered. They should learn from this and elect a sprightly 60 year old next time!

I am a bit confused as to what I should "settle down" about?

Elaborate?

I call shenanigans.

His reason's that he is too old, frail etc is a joke. What about John Paul II who battled through Parkinson's until the end?? Surely Ratzinger would have felt too old for the position back in conclave and should have told the College of Cardinals that he was unsuitable.

No, pardon the pun, but I smell a rat.

Although, the prophecies concerning this are very, very interesting to say the least. I try not to spread doom porn around, though.

On the application form to become the pope, there needs to be a question on the page that reads,

"Have you ever been part of, or connected to a murderous dictatorial regime bent on destruction, genocide and global domination?" Yes/No
