Some images are just plain extraordinary -- and often, the photographer has invested a great deal of time and effort to make that image happen. Photographer Dave Morrow describes the process of among this image from #MountRainier nationalpark in October, 2012. "I went up to SunrisePoint at Mt. Rainier last weekend with my buddy Keith. After a lame sunset, we waited for the MilkyWay to come out. The placement was just perfect and the sky was pitch black! Time to jack up the ISO and shoot some stars...this was one of many from the night."

I thought the image was striking - one can see how the heavens could have such a profound impact on our hunter-gatherer ancestors. We lose sight of the world around us when we're holed up in our cities with our faces glued to the TV or computer screens.

The photographer sent the photo to the Department of the Interior (and has done so for many National Park photos), the DoI posted the photo on their Instagram page, from there the WH sent out a tweet linking to the DoI's Instagram post. So I don't think the photographer minds it at all, and it's all publicity for him.

I think images like this one highlight why it's important we maintain a National Park system, so we can preserve views like this one. It only takes a small amount of development with it's accompanying light pollution to eradicate our views of the night sky.

I hope there hasn't been a mistranslation-I am from the UK,and "chuffed"means "really pleased"over here,hence why I said it would go on my C.V. if I had taken the shot.

The photo is amazing anyhow,almost looks as though the milkyway is being exhaled by the mighty Mt Rainier.
No wonder the ancients told of sky serpents in their days of zero light pollution.

Any info on the exposure length of the photo?
Or is it a stacked image I wonder..

When I go in my garden on a clear night, it annoys me that I can see the towns dirty, orange glow ruining the show that is slap bang above us.

When my boys get older, i'll be taking them out to a place where the light pollution is minimal and show them the universe in all it's glory.

They'll probably just say, ''Dad, we're bored!''

I'm sure i've seen a member here with that picture as their avatar too..

The picture looks like its smoking/erupting. Maybe it's a warning saying Mt. Rainier is gonna get HAARP'd and erupt.


We needed a conspiracy in this thread.

It is absolutely beautiful and it has become my computer wallpaper, in ways this picture is humbling and I am reminded why I believe in god in my own way.
