This is outrageous, to say the least. I don't understand, why isn't the media reporting on all of this? What would happen if it was reported on the evening/afternoon news, would people actually do something about it?

The media is owned by banks. Do you think they'd really want us to know about this? Common sense no?

That is precisely why we don't learn anything worthwhile. I have stopped watching msm news for at least 5 years now. Not kidding! That is how bad it is. I rather be uninformed rather than misinformed. I rather watch sports and pornography, at least it is entertaining.

It is said the the country was always corrupt not currently. I suppose it is the same in any country you go to. Why even the communist state when it existed there was corruption. Same could be said even for North Korea. How else can they control the people. Money and food buys anything.

In many ways people are people, they want better things, they want money, women, men, all sorts of things. Some are prepared to go to any ends to get these things. If the laws at the top of the society are ingnored and not enforced it spreads through the whole society untill everything is corrupted. I see it as the perspective of "the Golden Bough" if the king was in power too long he grew evil and corrupt by the power and the land would suffer so they'd lop off his head every seven years. Might be an idea to reintroduce that.
yeah joking.

Our country is currently ran by crooks, who selectively enforce laws to suit their own needs.

I doubt if there is an honest person at the executive level of any of these corporations.

They are nothing but giant fat leeches.

I bet if you ask 100 people how many choices they had for governor, senator, congressman, potus, mayor, etc...95 would say two; democRATS and reBOOBlicans. With so much unchallenged ignorance because of a media owned by the same people who pay the campaign trails of "the big two" just HOW can anyone challenge the status quo?

In fact I always though there were 2 big parties and 1 or 2 small ones, because the small ones are not even on the ballots most of the time. You have to write in the actual name of the candidate and hope you spell it correctly to give credit where it should be given. "Other candidate"

I doubt the corruption in communist nations is 1/50th of capitalist countries, but we have been brainwashed so exhaustively, methodically, professionally that people automatically get the same knee jerk reaction you came up with.

communism=evil
capitalism=good or tolerable

What if the opposite is true? I bet it is. And do not confuse authoritarianism with corruption. The two often are irrellevant to each other. Not that I love communism, for the same reason I hate military service...disciplined regimentation. But you have to admit that too much freedom aka abdicating total responsibility to the "elected by the elite" and all their corruption is a very heavy burden to bear. People have to relly more on themselves and less on the government. The elite win because we abdicate too much power to their proxies, via ignorance and lazyness.

They might as well not have fined HSBC at all. 1.9 billion for an international bank of this magntitude is utter humiliation to the general public who trusts banks enough to do business with them. It is like going to a restaurant and ordering $200 worth of food, desert, beverage and leaving a $1 tip to the waiter. If I were the waiter not only would I refuse the tip, but I would actually punch the customer in the face even if it meant getting fired from my job. Seriously!

Must say i think Cobra.exe has finally found a topic we all agree on and don't debunk or disagree with any of the original points. Is this a first on ATS ? Thats got to mean something hasn't it ? We all know that there's terrible levels of coruption within our governments and accept it as fact. I'm in awe.

Well the bank admitted to a lot of what it did and the government via justice department admitted to what it think is appropriate. No speculation is really necessary. No debunking either. I mean what is there to debunk when it comes from official sources? If it came from presstv, the national enquirer, daily mail, beforeitsnews, hezzbollah, hamas, or any other non-western credible source people would be all over the messenger attacking him and neglecting the message.

At least that is what the paid hypocrites do. I and others are smart and experienced enough to know better!

How can American authorities fine a non US Bank?

More to the point, how can the Federal Reserve, a private bank, receive part of this 'fine' from a non US bank?!

There seems to be a few organisations that will be receiving money from this 'fine'.

The Federal Reserve hide their activities, yet are recipients from non USA bank fine, and said bank, the HSBC are not hiding their activities. Does that give HSBC the right to fine the Federal Reserve for not being transparent?!

They will probably get a negative interest loan from the federal reserve to cover what they paid to them, so in all probability they'll make money from getting fined.

Now what I want to know is, if they laundered 800 billion, why haven't they been fined 800 billion ?

If I broke the law and stole, defrauded, “missold", any amount of money and got caught. I would be expected to pay the whole amount back with a fat fine on top, with a prison sentence to teach me a lesson.

WE THE PEOPLE , EXPECT OUR REPRESENTATIVES TO INSIST ON ONE RULE FOR ALL.

Is it any wonder a banking institution that was built up around the Opium Trade in the 19th Century still dabbles in drug money?

This is prime evidence that the rule of law has seriously degraded in the US. An individual get's caught with drugs or a large amount of cash and they lose everything they own. Yet HSBC and Wachovia launder billions and pay a fine that's probably less than the money they skimmed while doing the transactions.

Equal Protection and Application of the Law my ass.

There is a trifecta; many do not see. Government, corporations, banks are in on this together; all three hands are shaking in agreement, and the other hand has the others back. Media? It's the mouth piece for all three...that's why sopa etc. is pushed to become law. SOPA is the equivalent of book burning; the red herring? The movie, music and software industry. Sure, they are not profiting as much as if people bought everything...but they are profiting more than before the internet; because of exposure...

The Patriot Act; basically declared everyone a terrorist threat to the trifecta of government, corporations, and banks.

Before; corporatisation of this country. Citizens stood in that spot: Government, Citizens, Banks. But since corporations are people and not an entity; citizens have been cut out of the equation. The solution is to remove that status from corporations; remove their ability to lobby as people, watch guard against corporate government bribery, and ban insider trading by anyone for any reason.

That's the long change road from the bottom...because we are not in the trifecta. The fastest non violent solution; is to blacklist any corporation that lobbies the government that is not an actual human being or .org for human rights. Dominoes pizza lobbies for pro-life; so you buy a pizza from them and are pro-choice...you just lost the battle. Same with Chic-fila lobbying against gay rights...and many many more; this is how the 1% are in control and shape policy. Black list corporations that lobby. They cannot exist without customers. Yes customers; not consumers. Trading money for service isn't seen as a custom anymore; it is seen as consumption...very disturbing; it means we are all just useless eaters in their eyes. Many people are cogs, that keep this machine running and don't even know it; educate them, perhaps they will seek employment elsewhere if possible. Or become an internal agent for good if corruption is revealed; they can attest to these practices.

Some banks as other have said are too big too fail; because they are in the trifecta; they have the hand on their back for support. Where is our agreement? The constitution. Where is our hand on the back? Each other. We have been demoted in position and we need to take it back; or else watch everything become an Orwellian nightmare; even more horrible than it already is. The media takes our support from each other; so we cannot arrive at a majority consensus; while the corporations buy amendments and freedom away from the constitution.

Once the constitution is scrapped from false flags; and bogus science. The collective noose has been securely set; all it needs then is a nod to pull the lever. It is the 11th hour for this country...it's not quite too late, but setting the clock back; to the day the Constitution was ratified is going to take a lot of work.

The country is run by the banks. Therefore the banks are the law. So they can quite literally get away with murder if they so pleased
