In reference to scaring the children....

My reading class, consisting of 10 students aged 9-10, discussed this briefly today.

One student popped off with "Did you know the world is going to end when we are on Christmas break?"

That started all 10 mouths jabbering about every detail they had heard.

I told them that some people have the idea that the world will end on 12/21 but it will NOT. Everything will be fine.

To which at least half of them started screaming BUT IT COULD! IT COULD HAPPEN RIGHT NOW!

I told them yes, it could happen right now but it isn't very likely is it? Then I redirected back to our unit test.

None of them were one bit scared. They were all laughing and talking about stupid ways the world could end. They were mostly excited they wouldn't have to return to school after the break.

I will say, though. When I was young I got a hold of one of those "Sun" magazines that gives horrible predictions about the end of the world. I read something about the world ending in the next year or something and it scared the ever loving heck out of me. I was sick to my stomach and worried for days. I can definitely see how this talk could get some kids upset.

Now all we need is reassurance about the geopolitical situation.
I am morbidly curious about the number of self-fulfilling deaths that may happen in 3 weeks. I hope we don't see any parents doing murder-suicides on their children to "save" them....

Maybe NASA should have had a sit down conversation with Hollywood before they made the fear porn movie 2012! It's much easier to blame the "stupid, crazies" for believing such nonsense tho right?

The problem with end of the world prophecies such as the Mayan Calendar ending is that there are 1,000,000 such prophecies that permiate the spectrum of human belief. 999,999 of these end of world prophecies are wrong. One will be the correct prophecy of how the world ends.

How do we find such a needle in order to keep it from pricking and bleeding humanity out like a stuck a pig.

What most concerns me is the "What?" that the scientists reply back to when asked a question about 3 days of darkness.

Many theories show why the sun would go dark for 3 days because of the alignment, but the fact is that it shows with their response to this question and "What?" means there is something else to it. Just imagine yourself when someone brings up something that you may have information about, surprised that they have asked that question, you think what, but they said this out loud.

I've been talking more and more about the solstice with people lately (makes sense since we're getting so close now) but it's been getting on my nerves how many people have the view similar to "don't believe the Mayan stuff. the world isn't going to end." Honestly I've not seen anything from any Mayan source claiming the end of the world. Just a beginning of a new cycle/era and the "end" of a cylical calendar. The only reason it ends is so it can start over again.

But this brings up some good points about those who are younger or less informed, because there are people who are genuinely getting freaked out now and those who do have at least some general knowledge of the Mayan calander should be bringing it up more in conversation to quell the fears of those who are getting bad information. THE WORLD ISN'T GOING TO END. hopefully some of the current paradigms will, but you're going to be fine

I blame the adults, for telling their kids this hogwash. The human race will be the end of itself left to our own designs. As for me the even before 12-21-12, I'll be sleeping like a baby after a good feeding.

Every so many years there's always a dooms day prophecy. This isn't the first time something has been taken out of context and expanded to scare the masses. Everybody likes a good scare once in awhile.

It's unfortunate how some people really get worked up over it. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to make money off the Mayans calender ending on December 21, 2012. Hollywood does a great job playing on the fears of the public. It's a money maker for them and anyone else trying to make a quick buck.

I say throw a party on December 21st, this way if the world does come to an end, you'll go out with a bang.

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said. "

Why is a big surprise? Millions still believe in gods....

Heck, it isn't all dark, I know some nut jobs who think Dec 21 is a time for ascension to the 4th plane, or something like that.

So, let's take NASA's word for it that nothing is going to happen? The one's who are still sticking to the whole "WE LANDED ON THE MOON" story?
I personally don't think anything is going to happen, but I wouldn't just go with "well, NASA said so"

Being born in 1971, i grew up in the 80's and lived thinking each day could be my last and was scared to death of watching my family melt in front of me from a nuclear war. The propaganda movies, the short educational films telling you how to survive shown on TV etc sure scared the living daylights out of me and my friends, so 2012 has become a bit of a non event for our generation. We have become desensatized to the fear factor and each new doomsayer laughed about, this website is great though and i really admire the ways people are pulling together to debunk this baloney and set people straight. Rather than an official statement from Never A Straight Answer, maybe there should be an official statement from ATS!!!

Monday, December 24th is going to be a very depressing work day for allot of the world.
No end in sight for the slow, mind-numbing, brain dead, death march to the certain future of old age, rising costs of living, health problems, organ failure and eventually death.

Let's hope something does happen. For our children's sake.

nasa, what a waste of dollars they have become and when did they get into the psychology field?

anyway if you want to scare anyone, just explain our current state of economics and the inevitable collapse of the dollar. or maybe the fallout from Fukushima that we will be absorbing for multiple decades. you could go into the still ongoing BP oil spill and subsequent polluting of the Atlantic.

we could talk about the possibility of global famine due to droughts, or genetic manipulation and it's effects on species current and future.

please nasa enlighten us on your fix for the REAL problems we have, instead of worrying about Mayan prophecy.

Ugh, I agree with you on the genetic manipulation, etc., but it doesn't surprise me that someone who thinks NASA is a waste of money also thinks the collapse of the dollar is inevitable. It's not, and NASA, to this day, remains the greatest taxpayer investment we have ever, and continue to make. It's also a drop in the bucket compared to our defense budget.

Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day.

New to ATS are we?

As you most likely noticed, we have an entire forum dedicated to this topic.
Unless I glazed over the crucial aspect of this thread, I'm just not seeing any "new, relevant" information in this article.

Right... Some people are worried. Didn't take a scientist to prove that one.

This is kind of worrisome coming from NASA. NASA has always lied about this/that/and everything else in the past.

Would you not agree?

If NASA is telling us not to worry, don’t you think it would probably be a good idea to worry?
