American Mad Man - re your question on football, I can only speak for Ottawa, but here hockey way overtakes football. Around March or April, you can't go around the city without seeing Ottawa Senators flags on car antennas, decals on restaurant windows, etc. It actually took me a while to ascertain that our football team is indeed called the Ottawa 67's.

Re the rest of the thread... I understand why this was created, and I'm once again getting really weary of nation-bashing. No, Americans should not be ashamed of being Americans, and they have every reason to be proud of their nationality. On the other hand, no, I do not feel any compulsion to become American. I'm proud of being Canadian as much as Americans are proud of being Americans. Can we leave it at that?

Yes it is about respect for other nations. Hundreds of millions of people or even billions would prefer to stay in their own country than to live in the United States. I'm one of them.

Respect my country and I'll respect yours.
